Published: 09/05/2011

A 53-year-old man who was stabbed while walking through a city centre park in Southampton yesterday, Sunday, May 8, is now recovering at home. He has today been released from hospital after having stitches to the wound.

Detectives have now identified the exact area of the park where it happened and are asking for witnesses to come forward. The incident occurred in East Park between 2.15pm and 3pm by the exit to Park Walk near the gates that lead to the East Park, Southampton City Council depot.

The attacker was seen to run from there along Park Walk towards the newly created grass gap where Tyrell and Green used to be. There were people sat in this area of the park and in the new grass gap.

Detective Constable Jonny Hyland who is investigating the crime said: “This appears to be an unusual set of circumstances which has led to this seemingly motiveless attack.

“We are seeking to find the man responsible as soon as possible and would like to hear from anyone who was in the area at the time who has information about the incident.

“We have had a good response from members of the public which has identified many lines of enquiry. We have a team of detectives working on this investigation known as Operation Corfe trying to find the offender. In addition we also have local uniformed officers conducting reassurance patrols in the area."

The offender is described as:

• White
• Aged approximately 25 to 30 years
• 5ft 11ins to 6ft tall
• Medium to heavy build (14-16 stone in weight)
• Ginger beard
• He was wearing a dark coloured tracksuit style top and bottoms and a black woolly hat or cap
