A man was given a 12 month custodial sentence yesterday after standing trial at Portsmouth Crown Court for sexually assaulting a woman in 2008.

On September 22 police received reports of an incident at an address in Foster Road where a 30-year-old woman was sexually assaulted.

Joe Dickinson, a 32-year-old man from Foster Road, was arrested on the same day and later charged, and was remanded in custody until his court appearance.

Detective Sergeant Bryan Carter said, “This is an excellent result which brings to an end a complex and sensitive investigation, and I hope this will allow the victim and their family to feel some closure and to move on with their lives.

“This case also highlights the importance of having a specialised and dedicated rape investigation unit within the city. We have been able to focus our skills and attention in a clearer direction since the launch of the Crystal Unit, delivering a greater level of service to the victim, which is a priority in every case.”
