Local police in Portsmouth to hold a community engagement day

Press Releases

Published: 27/08/2010

Officers from three Safer Neighbourhood teams (SNTs) will be holding a joint community day at Fratton next month.

The Copnor & North End, Hilsea and Baffins Safer Neighbourhoods Teams will be hosting a ‘Crime Reduction Environment Day’, or CRED, in London Road, on Wednesday, September 15.

The event will be open to residents, shop owners, members of public and the local surrounding community, and is an ideal opportunity for people to meet their local officers and see what services are available to them.

PCSO Michelle Slater of the Copnor and North Ends SNT said: “This event is aimed at allowing us to engage with the people that use and travel through this popular shopping area, as well as getting to know our local residents and shop owners.

“Although crime is reducing in Portsmouth it is important to sustain high visibility patrols within the local community, and advertise the initiatives local beat teams have in place.”

Throughout the day multi agencies will be present in order to engage with local residents. Amongst them are CHAT – The Family Information Service, Trading Standards, The Learning Centre, community wardens and the Road Safety and Sustainable Travel team.

Sergeant Pete Phillips of the Baffins and Copnor & North End SNTs said “It is so important for the community to know who their local officers are, and for them to see officers responding to the issues that residents have highlighted as mattering most to them.”

“We run events such as this in order to maintain positive regular contact with people who live and work in the communities we support, and we will continue to work hard to achieve low crime levels and good relationships between local police officers and the people living in the area.”

PCSO Helen Jolley added: “CREDs are a fantastic way to engage with the community and put the local officers in the heart of their beat. There are so many services on offer in Portsmouth that are available to everyone, and this is a good way for people to find out what is out there for them.”
