Investigation continues to identify driver after collision with teenage cyclist on the Isle of Wight

Police are continuing to investigate a road traffic collision in which a teenage cyclist was injured on a main road in Newport on the Isle of Wight.

The 13-year-old boy from Cowes, Isle of Wight was cycling along Medina Way towards school in Newport on the morning of Tuesday, February 8, 2011. At approximately 8am, he stopped to give way to traffic at the junction between the hospital side of St. Mary’s roundabout and the southbound carriageway of Medina Way. The teenager was waiting at the front of the far right-hand lane of traffic when a car travelling in the same direction on the southbound carriageway outside St. Mary's Hospital collided with the rear of his black Dawes bicycle. The cyclist fell off his bike and received a cut to his right leg.

The woman driving the Peugeot initially stopped to speak with the 13-year-old boy but then left the scene without leaving her name or contact details. The car was described as a Peugeot 306, which was either blue or purple in colour.

The Peugeot driver was described as:

● White
● Aged in her 30s
● Dark shoulder length hair

She was wearing

● A black coat with a red top
● A black and white beaded necklace
● Possibly a lanyard containing an ID card.

A Hampshire Constabulary spokesman said: “Police have pursued several lines of enquiry over the past month in an attempt to identify and trace the driver. We’re now renewing our work with the boy’s family to publish a photo of his injury to help encourage the motorist or any further witnesses to contact police. Although the injury was not life threatening, the collision could have had more serious consequences at a busy roundabout during rush hour.”

The cyclist, 13-year-old Joe Burnip from Cowes, said: “The collision was quite shocking and nerve-racking for me. I was shaking and upset afterwards as I could feel a pain in my right leg. I would like to thank the duty manager who was working at the nearby B and Q store in Newport on the day I was hurt. After the collision, I went to B and Q where the manager gave me first aid and brought me home that day. My leg is fine now.”
