Hard hitting alcohol awareness DVD for young teenagers launched in Southampton
Press Releases
Published:
23/10/2009
A new DVD has been launched by the police in Southampton aimed at making young teenagers aware of the danger they could be putting themselves in by drinking too much alcohol.
In an ideal world those under 18 shouldn’t be drinking alcohol at all but the video reacts to the reality of the situation and sets out to inform them that if you are going to drink make sure you do so in moderation.
The 25 minute DVD features Ben Glover from radio station ‘galaxy 103.2’ hosting a phone-in show where various young callers phone in with their problems all connected with alcohol. This sets the scene for a series of short films which look at the potential consequences of drinking too much from being a rape victim to being arrested to fatal road crashes to liver disease.
There are reconstructions of events, interviews with victims and their families and photos of a real fatal car crash.
A medical expert also talks about the dangers to your health of drinking to much alcohol and the programme features information about one man who died from liver disease earlier this year aged 22 because he had been binge drinking from the age of 13.
Youth Engagement Officer for Southampton Lorraine Barry, said: “We plan to use the DVD in an unusual way to bring the message home to youngsters. Whenever we stop a youngster with alcohol, not only will we confiscate it as usual and take their details but we will also contact their parents and with their co-operation arrange to go to their home and show them the DVD and discuss the issues.
“We also hope to make the DVD available to schools and other agencies not only locally but eventually nationally so we can reach as many young teenagers as possible.”
Anyone interested in finding out more about the DVD should contact PC Barry on 0845 045 45 45 or email her at

. the DVD Currently costs £20.
