A Hampshire Constabulary officer has been convicted of the unauthorised use of a computer.
PC Robert Campbell from the Central Operational Command Unit appeared at Guildford Crown Court yesterday. He was convicted of the offence of the unauthorised use of a computer, contrary to section 1(1) of the Computer Misuse Act 1990. The case has been adjourned to Friday June 18 for sentence.
The investigation into PC Campbell began following a complaint from a member of the public. Detective Inspector Dave Morgan from Hampshire Constabulary’s Anti Corruption Unit said: “The conviction of PC Campbell demonstrates that we take seriously allegations about illegal behaviour of our staff.
“In this case PC Campbell accessed data held within our force's records management system for his own personal use, which is unlawful." "I would encourage any member of the public to have confidence in reporting what they believe to be misuse of data, to us. This can be via 101 or anonymously to the Crimestoppers Integrity Line 0800 111444 or their website www.theiline.co.uk.
"As a result of this conviction, we will now consider whether PC Campbell should face formal disciplinary action in accordance with the Police (Conduct) Regulations 2008."
