Police in Southampton have charged four men after a concierge operator called them to tell them he was witnessing a car being broken into on CCTV.
All the tower blocks in International Way, Weston have a concierge service run by the City Council. The service also has a very effective CCTV system.
The operator who witnessed the break-in was able to tell officers what was taken as it happened and the details of the car the suspects were making off in.
Police quickly responded to the incident on Thursday, October 23 and stopped a car a short distance away where the stolen items were recovered.
Four men were arrested and charged with theft, additionally one of them was also charged with driving without a licence and having no insurance.
The car was also seized under the Traffic Act. The four men, aged between 19 and 24, will appear before Southampton Magistrates Court on Wednesday, November 5.
Safer Neighbourhoods Sergeant for Weston, Al Dineley said: “This shows how well the concierge system works in the tower blocks in Weston.
“The quality of the CCTV and the quick thinking of the operator meant we were able to recover the stolen goods nearby and it has resulted in four people being charged with theft.
“It also shows how the police and council are working in partnership to cut crime and protect the International Way area.”
