Don’t score an own goal this summer and lose your licence while driving under the influence
While a long hot summer and a World Cup to watch in the pub sounds like a great way to relax, it could spell disaster if you mix alcohol and driving or drugs and driving.
That’s the message from Hampshire Constabulary as the annual Summer crackdown on drink and drug driving kicks off.
Officers from Roads Policing Units from across Hampshire and the Isle of Wight will be carrying out targeted operations throughout June and are warning drivers not to take the risk by driving under the influence of drink and or drugs.
The force is committed to tackling this form of anti-social behaviour and taking dangerous drivers off Hampshire’s roads.
Sergeant Darren Ord, of the Roads Policing Unit, said: “If you are planning to go out and enjoy the sunshine and the World Cup in a pub this summer, make sure you plan ahead and organise a safe journey home.
“Drivers also need to remember that alcohol and drugs can remain in the system for some time, so you may still not be safe to drive the next morning.
“Driving under the influence of alcohol and or illegal drugs puts you and other road users at the risk.
“Alcohol makes it difficult to judge distances, while cannabis can slow your reaction times and cocaine makes you more likely to take risks.”
Throughout the campaign, which runs from June 1 to June 30, residents of Hampshire and the Isle of Wight are being encouraged to be vigilant and report anyone they suspect may be driving under the influence of drink and or drugs.
If you suspect someone is driving under the influence and could cause immediate danger then you should dial 999. If it is not an emergency situation, you can call 101 or send a text message to 80999.
Callers outside Hampshire can use 0845 045 45 45.
Sergeant Ord added: “The consequences of driving while under the influence of drink and or drugs can be fatal either to you or to others. It could also result in a fine, a driving ban or even a prison sentence.”
