Detectives in Basingstoke have released CCTV images of a man they want to speak to in connection with an attempted robbery and a robbery in the town.

At about 11.30pm on Tuesday, January 3, a 28-year-old man was approached from behind in Church Square by a man who assaulted him and demanded he hand over money.

The victim refused and the man - who is described as Asian, about 5ft 10ins tall, aged in his early 20s and of an average build - ran off. He had short dark hair, a goatee beard and was wearing dark trousers and a dark jacket.

Shortly after this incident, police received reports of a robbery which happened in Worting Road at about midnight. An 18-year-old girl was walking home, near to Costcutter, when she was approached from behind and grabbed.

The man - who is described as wearing a baggy light-coloured hooded top - then ripped her handbag from her body and walked off.

Detective Constable Jo Blanchard said: "The man in the checked jacket is who I need to identify as soon as possible.

“However, I would also like to speak to the other man in the dark-coloured jacket, as it is believed he was with the man in the checked jacket that evening.
