Detectives in Portsmouth are appealing for witnesses to come forward after a robbery where a man was assaulted and money was taken from his wallet in Elm Grove, Southsea.

At 6.08pm on Saturday, February 7, police received reports of a man being attacked near to the traffic lights in Elm Grove.

On arrival the aggrieved man, a 41-year-old from Southsea, was found on the floor with injuries to his head and face, and £20 had been taken from his wallet.

Witnesses reported having seen another man, who appeared to be intoxicated, attacking the man and kicking him on the ground.

The injured man was taken by ambulance to Queen Alexandra hospital for treatment, and suffered severe swelling to his head and face, as well as a broken nose.

The offender is described as:

  • White
  • Around 6ft tall
  • Aged in his 40s
  • Stocky build
  • Shaven head

Detective Constable Pete Bambury said, “This type of attack at this time in the evening is very rare. The victim of the robbery suffered serious injuries to his head and face that required him to go to hospital for treatment. I know that there were numerous cars and people in the area during the incident and I appeal to anyone that saw this man being attacked to come forward. The person responsible is also very distinctive and may even live locally, so if anyone knows this man I urge them to speak to Portsmouth CID.”
