Detectives in Basingstoke are appealing for witnesses following an attempted robbery and a robbery in the town.

At about 11.30pm on Tuesday, January 3, a 28-year-old man was approached from behind in Church Square by a man who assaulted him and demanded he hand over money.

The victim refused and the man - who is described as Asian, about 5ft 10ins tall, aged in his early 20s and of an average build - ran off. He had short dark hair, a goatee beard and was wearing dark trousers and a dark jacket.

Shortly after this incident, police received reports of a robbery which happened in Worting Road at about midnight.

An 18-year-old girl was walking home, near to Costcutter, when she was approached from behind and grabbed.

The man - who is described as wearing a baggy light-coloured hooded top - then ripped her handbag from her body and walked off.

Detective Constable Jo Blanchard said: “I am appealing for anyone who saw anything suspicious which could be related to either of these incidents to contact me.

“It is not currently known if this was the same person involved in both robberies, but this is being investigated.”
