Crime Prevention Team target motorist direct at event in Southampton to help cut car crime

Southampton’s Crime Prevention Team are going pro-active today, Thursday, May 20 at an event in Lordshill, Southampton to warn people about car crime.
Motorists and passengers often make themselves easy targets for thieves by leaving valuable items on display in their vehicles. This can be everything from Sat Navs to handbags and tools. Thieves can see them easily and within seconds can smash a window and make off with the goods. Even just leaving a satellite navigation holder on the windscreen can encourage thieves to break-in and look for the device. Between April 1 and my 1 this year there were 142 thefts from vehicles in the city.
To help make people aware about how they can help themselves not to be a victim of crime Southampton’s Crime Prevention Team are giving away new tax disc holders with advice on the back and a message on the front telling would be thieves there are no valuables in the car.
Crime Prevention Officer Laura Harvey said: “The Crime Prevention Team and I will be at Sainsbury’s car park at Lordshill from around 11am till 4pm speaking directly to motorists to make them more aware of car crime.
“As well as the tax disc holders we’ll also have a stall offering other crime prevention advice and freebies such as UV pens so people can mark their property. No one can resist a freebie and this one could help stop people becoming a victim of crime in the future!”
The Daily Echo will also have a stall at the event and will be giving away further crime prevention freebies including lanyards to help stop purse thefts and a limited number of timer switches when people buy their newspaper.
The team hope to hold similar events around the city targeting motorists direct with the new tax disc holders and speaking to them about car crime. It is hoped it will lead to less people being victims of crime.
