Community invited to join in the fun in Buckland

Press Releases

Published: 18/04/2008

Buckland residents are being invited to come and join in the fun as local officers hold a Crime Reduction and Environment Week (CREW) in the area.

The Nelson Safer Neighbourhoods Team have been working towards a week where community members of all ages can take part in a range of activities and events.

From April 21 to April 26, community events and police activity will be taking place in a push to continue making Buckland safer and happier places to live and visit.

CREWs are police projects which take place all over the county, and involve a focus on a particular area to help improve it for residents.

The three main attractions for the week offer something for everyone. On Wednesday, April 23, it’s ‘Health, Respect and Wellbeing Day’, where Buckland Community Centre will be opening its doors between 10am and 4pm for visitors to enjoy a tea dance and raffle ticket sale, and a range of partnership agencies and experts will be there to give advice and talk about issues from sexual and mental health or success in gaining employment to safety advice for the home.

Friday, April 25 is ‘Community Day’, where a carnival will begin a journey around the local area from the Charles Dickens Centre at 3pm, after which a bar-b-que and disco will get underway at the Buckland Play Centre on Malins Road.

The week will draw to a close on Saturday, April 26, with ‘Sports Day’. Volunteers from the University of Portsmouth are going to be on hand to run taster sessions for children to take part in, with favourites like 5-a-side football and hockey taking place alongside newer activities like street dancing, break dancing and cheerleading.

The raffle will also be drawn on Saturday, with ticket monies going to charity, and a variety a of great prizes have been donated, including a cake displaying a photo of the team!

Sergeant Ben McClane, who has organised the CREW event, said, “There are so many of our partner agencies who have helped us make these different activities a reality, and I really believe it’s things like this that make such a difference to people’s lives. This type of community policing has come under the spotlight much more in recent years and it’s great to be able to do something so positive for the residents here in Buckland and Landport.

“All local people are welcome along to any of the events going on throughout the week and I’d encourage people to come down and join us. We have organised these events especially for the residents and there will be something for everyone, so they should all come along and enjoy themselves!”
