Christmas cards from the partnership sent under Operation Drink Safe
Press Releases
Published:
15/12/2008
A total of 70 people will have received specially designed Christmas cards by today (Monday, December 15) reminding them not to enter the pubs and clubs in Guildhall Walk this Christmas and New Year.
Each recipient has either a banning notice or an exclusion order, imposed by the courts following a violent crime committed by the person whilst under the influence of alcohol.
The notices and orders have been issued under Operation Drink Safe, a campaign launched in July 2007, aimed at tackling alcohol related violence in the Guildhall Walk area of Portsmouth.
The campaign is carried out by the Safer Portsmouth Partnership, and has the support of licensees in Guildhall Walk. The banning notices and exclusion orders have been issued for a variety of offences and are all effective through into 2009.
Christmas and New Year are celebratory times of year when many go out with friends and family, and people who have received the Drink Safe notices and orders are reminded not to risk more severe punishments by attending the premises from which they have been banned.
Officers and door staff working in the area attend regular briefings on those who have received the cards and will be maintaining a presence in Guildhall Walk as normal.
The cards have been designed with a festive turkey on the front, and text inside advising the recipient of the consequences if they are arrested.
Inspector Louise Tester said, “We operate a system of banning violent offenders from pubs and clubs in Portsmouth in order to provide a safe environment for everyone to enjoy. Our overall aim is to ensure a safe and happy Christmas and New Year for everyone, and these cards are just a reminder of that.”
