Three people have been arrested in Southampton by police investigating the use of social networking to attempt to incite violent disorder.

Two people are in custody in Southampton this morning (Thursday, August 11) after being arrested on suspicion of inciting violence on the social networking site Twitter. A 25-year-old woman and a 27-year-old man, both from the Shirley area of Southampton, were arrested by police yesterday evening and remained in custody overnight. The arrests were made following an investigation by Hampshire Constabulary detectives into posts on Twitter encouraging people to riot in Southampton. They will be questioned throughout the day.

A 27-year-old man, also from Southampton, was also arrested yesterday on suspicion of using the Blackberry Messenger service to incite violent disorder. He has been released on bail pending further inquiries, and will report to police in October.

Hampshire Constabulary heightened its presence amongst the communities across Hampshire and the Isle of Wight to provide reassurance to the public and prevent disorder and antisocial behaviour. 

There were no incidents relating to civil disorder.

Officers continue to actively engage with all members of the community today to keep the peace across the two counties.
