Police are appealing for witnesses after two men were attacked in Alton in the early hours of Christmas Eve.

The incident occurred as the two local men; a 39-year-old man and a 40-year-old man left the Wheatsheaf pub and walked along Lenten Street towards the junction of Westbrook Road at about 1.30am.

As they walked home they heard shouting from behind them and then remember being attacked.

The 39-year-old man had his nose bitten and suffered serious facial injuries as a result. The 40-year-old man also suffered injuries to his head which required stitches. It is believed both men lost consciousness and have not been able to provide descriptions of their attackers.

Detective Constable Colin Heggarty said: “This seems to have been an unprovoked attack on two men enjoying the festivities in Alton before heading home for Christmas. I would appeal for anyone with information to contact us as soon as possible.”
