Read on for advice about burglary.

The Safer Homes campaign aims to raise awareness on what can be done to reduce the chances of having your home burgled.

Domestic burglaries in the UK cost the taxpayer £2.9 billion a year. Burglary peaked in the mid-1990s and then fell by 59 per cent between 1995 and 2008, but you can help reduce burglary statistics in Hampshire and the Isle of Wight even further.

There are plenty of things you can do to protect yourself from becoming a victim of burglary. Eighteen per cent of homes don't have proper door locks and 14 per cent of homes don't have proper window locks. The British Crime Survey reported that 36 per cent of burglaries result from insecure premises.

Often, the simplest measures can be the most effective in making life difficult for burglars and potential burglars.

Suspicious callers

Distraction burglary involves criminals, often labelled 'bogus callers', distracting or tricking individuals into letting them access their property with the intention of committing a burglary.

Going on holiday?

Many burglars target only empty homes. If you are going on holiday or even if you’re just out at work all day, try to make it look like someone is home and don’t advertise your absence.

Student homes at risk

Safer homes advert

A student house or flat often contains many more possessions than an average family home with several occupants often having laptops, TVs and stereos. As a result student houses are very desirable for burglars. Follow the tips in our multimedia message to keep your property safe.

What to do if you are burgled

If you come home and find a broken window or lights on and you think there might be a burglar inside, don’t go into the house. Go to a neighbour’s house and call 999. Don’t put yourself in danger.
