‘Cops v Kids’ – the Nintendo Wii challenge at the HMS Sultan Show
To improve the level of engagement police in Gosport have with local young people, a special community challenge was held at the Royal Navy’s HMS Sultan Show on Saturday, June 19 and Sunday, June 20.
‘Cops v Kids’ saw officers from Gosport challenged by young people on Nintendo’s popular Wii games console in a variety of games, via large projector screen set up at the show.
Parents and guardians were extremely positive about the challenge, commenting that it went a long way in breaking down barriers between the police and the local youngsters.
Sergeant Simon Law said: “I’m pleased to say that the challenge was a great success and we achieved what we set out to do – improving the relationship we have with the young people in our community.
“Our intention is to hold other events in Gosport over the year at community events, in areas associated with anti-social behaviour. They’re designed to be fun but more importantly, they’re a great opportunity for the police and young people to interact with each other in a relaxed setting.

Rowdy tenants dealt with by police
Rowdy tenants and visitors to a house on Hercules Street in the Nelson area of Portsmouth were causing a headache for the other residents.
In response, we’ve been conducting high-visibility patrols in the area and officers from the Safer Neighbourhoods team arrested two people and cautioned another at the address for drugs offences.
We’ve also been speaking to the landlord to warn him that we could have the address closed down.
As a result, he took action to have the issues at the address resolved himself. Since then, the street has been much quieter, day and night, and we’ve sent round a mail shot to local residents to let them know what we’ve done.

The police regularly support responsible events and activities for young people with Cowes Youth Forum.
Park Gate SNT tackles anti-social behaviour with monthly operation
As part of the force’s ongoing commitment to reduce anti-social behaviour in our communities, officers from Park Gate West Safer Neighbourhoods team have set up a monthly operation to target incidents of ASB.
'Operation Hammock’ takes place on selected nights every month, and involves PCs, PCSOs and Special Constables working with ACSOs from the council around the Locks Heath area, targeting known hot spots for anti-social behaviour - such as Locks Heath Shopping Centre.
PC Jackie Wild said: “Anti-social behaviour was becoming more of a problem and we had to tackle it effectively, sending a message that it won’t be tolerated. This is a very localised approach for specific anti-social behaviour problems on our beat.
“During the operation, some officers head out in plain clothes to spot trouble makers and anti-social incidents - reporting to officers in uniform, who then take the appropriate action against those causing problems. We also have an unmarked RPU team out and about to tackle any anti-social driving. “
We work closely with residents who have recently suffered from anti-social behaviour and criminal damage, and they are given contact numbers for the team, so they can relay any sightings or incidents on the night. We then update them the following week with results from the night’s policing.
