CRIME AWARENESS
HELP US TO REDUCE CRIME IN YOUR NEIGHBOURHOOD
Although crime levels are low in the New Forest, burglars and car crime criminals may be operating in your neighbourhood. If you see anyone or anything suspicious in your neighbourhood, please contact the police immediately on 101 or dial 999 if a crime is taking place.
Always lock doors and windows when leaving your home unattended and do not leave valuables on view.
Apply the same security measures when leaving your car and never leave anything of value in your vehicle. If it's not left in the vehicle, it can't be stolen.
Locally, we work with your community to find out what matters most where you live. We will work with you and our partner agencies to agree the main priorities for the area and how we will work together to tackle them.
Safer Neighbourhoods priorities for Ringwood and surrounding areas include:
- Reduce thefts and 'making off without payment' offences at local filling stations
- Reduce criminal damage, anti-social behaviour and underage drinking at Carvers Recreation Ground, Queensway, Spittlefields and Ash Grove play park
- Reduce criminal damage in the Ringwood town, Hightown and Poulner areas
- Reduce thefts from motor vehicles parked in car parks, particularly in the Bransgore and Burley areas
- Reduce anti-social behaviour and vehicle nuisance in Hurst Road and Headlands Business Park
These are the priorities that people in your local area have agreed with the Safer Neighbourhoods team. You can influence these priorities by contacting your team, attending a meeting or speaking to members of the team when you see them out and about.
Actions we have taken in relation to your priorities
Be Safe: Ringwood SNT teach that knives cost lives
PC Keith Waller has been visiting local school children to raise awareness about the dangers of carrying weapons. PC Waller has been running educational workshops for pupils aged 11–18 which aim to challenge young people’s perceptions of weapons and violence and use real life examples to demonstrate the harsh reality of what carrying a knife can lead to – even when it is just for self defence.
His visits are part of the ‘Be Safe’ weapons awareness programme which is endorsed by the Home Office and has been introduced at schools all around the UK. While knife crime is extremely rare in the New Forest area, our officers are working hard to ensure that all local children have been educated about weapons so that they are well aware of the consequences of choosing to carry one.
Reducing alcohol related crime: Pub Watch success continues
In partnership with local licensed premises we have formed Ringwood Pub Watch. The Pub Watch has 14 members which include all of the town centre pubs and clubs and meets monthly. They may ban anyone using violence or threats, causing damage, habitually causing trouble or disorder or involved in the taking/distribution of drugs on licensed premises. A ban from one is a ban from all premises involved in Pub Watch. Over the last two years this has led to 21 people being banned from all public houses in the scheme for at least a year, which has played an important part in making Ringwood a safer place to socialise. If you have an incident relating to licensed premises that you would like to bring to the attention of Pub Watch then please email ringwoodpubwatch@hampshire.pnn.police.uk or telephone 101.
Reducing street drinking and anti-social behaviour
In relation to the problem of drinking in public places the team has been proactively targeting those areas where alcohol related anti-social behaviour is likely to occur. The problem is not restricted to young people and several adults have received notices to leave the area or have been arrested for public order or drink related offences. We believe that this has resulted in a safer environment and significantly reduced the fear of crime in the area around the Ringwood Tourist Information Centre and Bus Station. Alcohol will continue to be confiscated from underage people and those that supply them. The Ringwood, Bransgore and Burley area licensed premises are regularly subjected to test purchasing. We would encourage anyone with evidence of underage sales to contact the team by email ringwood.snt@hampshire.pnn.police.uk or telephone 101.
Community Engagement
Ringwood School and the Safer Neighbourhoods team are working together to help engage with young people in their own environment. The school is visited regularly at lunchtimes and pupils are encouraged to express their concerns to the team in an informal way. Safer Neighbourhoods officers are engaged in delivering the National ‘Be Safe’ package to pupils within the school, which is designed to educate young people in the danger and consequences of carrying a weapon.
Market Place benefits from high visibility foot patrols by officers on market day (Wednesday) and on Friday/Saturday nights. The team holds a monthly beat surgery from 10am – 1pm at the market on the first Wednesday of the month. Members of the community are invited to speak to local officers about their concerns and can receive crime prevention help and advice. The surgery is held in partnership with Ringwood Town Council.
How you can take action
Come and meet your Safer Neighbourhoods officers at one the following beat surgeries. These meetings allow you to come and discuss any concerns or issues you may have in your neighbourhood, or any other local policing matter. They are held at the following locations:
