Insp Andy ProctorDuring the past year our focus at Hedge End police station has been on the issues that affect the quality of life of the communities we serve.

Within the Hedge End Sector this is as diverse as  anti-social driving in the Hedge End retail car parks, to anti-social behaviour on the jetty in Hamble during the hot summer months; both issues affect the communities but in very different ways.

In respect of the anti-social driving, a lot of good work has taken place over the past year to tackle the road safety and other issues associated with the cruising community who regularly congregate on some of the retail parks in Hedge End. Following a series of targeted operations, the frequency of the cruising events was greatly reduced.  Enlisting support from colleagues within the environmental health, a number of exhaust pipes were checked for noise emissions and where appropriate action was taken.  The situation will continue to be closely monitored.

Focus on priority crimes like burglary, vehicle crime, illegal drug activity, violent crime and criminal damage also continues.  However the arrival of the recession has seen us deal with an increase in some very different crimes; for example fuel drive offs have increased, which has led to a greater collaboration with the petrol retailers to prevent further crimes and target offenders.

Shoplifting offences have also increased, not with the luxury items you would expect but basic foodstuffs.

The past year has seen some dramatic reductions in violent crime, vehicle crime and criminal damage, that said, we are not resting on our laurels, indeed a recent shift review of our staff has directed a number of changes that ensures we have the right people in the right places at the right time.

Changes such as these and the continued partnership working with Eastleigh Borough Council and the Town and Parish Councils will put us in the right position to tackle crime but also to listen to the community and seek to resolve the issues that affect them most.
