What have we been doing for you in recent weeks:

scOUT and abOUT: The Upper Shirley team have been scOUT and abOUT proactively promoting crime prevention messages and awareness with the 2nd Southampton City Scouts. Officers staged a Cops and Robbers re-enactment at the scouts Ridding Close headquarters where a burglary was committed, and then showed the attentive youngsters how police officers investigate and gather evidence afterwards.

Left to right above: The burglars prepare for their raid on a jewellery store, the investigators look for vital 'tell tale' signs and evidence at the crime scene and the Scout Police assist PC Gail Clarance with her enquiries.

Purse theft prevention: Another worthwhile activity the 2nd Southampton City Scouts have engaged in is learning how to make purse lanyards to help prevent purse thefts from womens handbags. PCSO Katie Ridd, above left, is seen supervising the process to a group of scouts while above right, the 2nd Southampton Scouts show their purse Lanyards created as part of their work towards their community badge. The group handed them out to shoppers on Shirley High Street, assisted by PCSO Ridd and PCSO Hopkins.
CRIME AWARENESS
HELP US TO REDUCE CRIME IN YOUR NEIGHBOURHOOD
Burglars and car crime criminals may be operating in your neighbourhood. If you see anyone or anything suspicious in your neighbourhood, please contact the police immediately on 101 or dial 999 if a crime is taking place.
Always lock doors and windows when leaving your home unattended and do not leave valuables on view. Apply the same security measures when leaving your car and never leave anything of value in your vehicle. If it's not left in the vehicle, it can't be stolen.
follow us on Twitter
We have our own Twitter account where we can 'tweet' to members of the public about what we're up to.
The 'tweets' or updates are posted on a daily basis and cover a variety of topics including the progress we're making on our beat, news stories, upcoming events, as well as 'retweets' of relevant police related matters in the Upper Shirley area. You can follow us and join us by clicking here to see what we're 'Tweeting'
Drugs: We have conducted more passive dog operations in Shirley Towers using a drugs dog, these have yielded positive results. The local residents and community are very keen about this work.
St. James Park: St. James Park is a wonderful new venue for play and recreation which has been revitalised by the work of the Friends of St. James, a group of local residents that have transformed the park with new equipment, tennis courts and play structures. This park has suffered from Anti-Social Behaviour (ASB) and robberies since its opening, mainly with groups of young people. We have spent a lot of time there patrolling, making sure the park and surrounding roads are a safe place to play and meet friends. We have a surgery in the café in this park which is held every two weeks; the next is the morning of February 21.
Youth Engagement: Youth engagement work in schools.
ASB visits to all our young people identified as being involved in ASB, advising them of our approach to ASB and the consequences for them if they engage in ASB in our communities.
Purse Thefts: Purse theft work. We have had a number of purse thefts in Shirley High Street, and have organised increased patrols to prevent this type of crime. We have been out in the High Street giving out lanyards and crime prevention advice to anyone vulnerable to this type of crime. We would urge everyone using the High Street to be aware of thieves when out shopping.
Cycling on pavements: We are still working on this issue which we know is a cause of nuisance to the users of Shirley High Street. We issue tickets and report for summons anyone we find riding on the pavement. Cyclists, you have been warned!
Burglaries: Operation Nemesis II is the Hampshire Constabulary initiative to reduce burglaries in our neighbourhoods. We have been busy giving out advice to prevent residents becoming a victim of crime. We have increased patrols and are working hard to reduce this crime. Residents can do many things to help them prevent becoming a victim of burglary by ensuring their home is always locked and secure when unattended and nothing of value is left on display. During the winter months timer switches can be used to activate lights to give a sense of occupancy while the home is temporarily unoccupied. Security marking property with your postcode using a UV pen or other permanent means can help reunite property with its owner should it be stolen and registering your property for free on www.immobilise.com/ the free website is also recommended.
Community Speedwatch: This has been run in many roads in our area and we have monitored more than 200 vehicles, some of which have received notification of their excess speed. We are working with the community and our Roads Policing Unit to reduce incidents of speeding.
Bus Lanes: We are concerned about the abuse of the bus lane at Wilton Road, Shirley, and urge users of this area to abide by the traffic sign and not drive along the bus lane. We have issued a large number of tickets to people using this bus lane in contravention of the traffic sign and we will continue to monitor this.
Neighbourhood Watch: Neighbourhood Watch (NHW) newsletters have gone out to all those NHW members in our area.
Your local priorities
Locally, we work with your community to find out what matters most where you live. We will work with you and our partner agencies to agree the main priorities for the area and how we will work together to tackle them.
If you want to influence what the policing priorities should be in the coming weeks and months in your neighbourhood, please come along to our next PACT meeting (date and venue to be confirmed)
Current neighbourhood priorities for Upper Shirley
- Vehicle obstruction in general in the area of Anglesea Road and the Griffin Pub
- To reduce anti-social behaviour in the vicinity of Raymond Road
These are the priorities that people in your local area have agreed with the Safer Neighbourhoods team. You can influence these priorities by contacting your team, attending a meeting or speaking to members of the team when you see them out and about.
Action taken in relation to your priorities
You said: Drug use and dealing in Shirley Towers was a problem
We did: We have carried out numerous drug operations in the area of Shirley Towers. This has involved the use of a police drugs dog. Police were able to identify anyone that entered or exited the towers that may have been in or were in possession of illegal substances. This has led to a number of prosecutions for drugs possession. Police will continue to monitor the problem although this is no longer a community priority.
You said: Cycling on the pavement in Shirley High Street was a continuing problem which had led to a number of near misses involving pedestrians being knocked over
We did: The local Safer Neighbourhoods officers have been robust in policing this problem. More than 50 people been prosecuted by the way of tickets issued or summonsed to court for this offence in the last six months. Police continue to patrol proactively along Shirley High Street, however as a result of our last Police and Community Together meeting this is no longer a community priority.
You said: Anti-social driving on Shirley High Street was a problem
We did: Safer Neighbourhoods officers carried out an operation in relation to this priority. Letters were delivered to all premises reminding them of the law in relation to parking outside shops. The letters also warned of police powers in relation to what would happen should motorists be found driving in an anti-social manner. Officers also carried out proactive patrols in the area were the most complaints were received. We have seen a reduction in the number of complaints about anti-social driving and hope the reminders alone have combated the problem.

Shirley Junior PCSO scheme
We run a Junior PCSO scheme for 7-12 year-olds in Shirley, at Wordsworth School between 4pm and 5.30pm.
It runs very other week on a Wednesday.
This initiative is partially funded through the generous support of the local Sainsburys supermarket whose staff kindly donated £500. This allows the Junior PCSOs to become involved in a whole range of fun activities focussed around working with the police and fire service learning about good citizenship
A parent or guardian permission slip is required to attend and more information about the scheme can be obtained from PCSO Andy Chapman. You can contact Andy via email on andrew.chapman@hampshire.pnn.police.uk

Some of the Junior PCSOs get the chance to explore inside a police patrol car and activate the blue flashing lights and two-tone horns under the watchful eye of PC Kelly Sanders.
