Inspector Rachel StokesInspector Rachel Stokes explains her approach to policing in Shirley:

In Shirley Sector I continue to focus on making our area safer and for residents to feel safer by providing an excellent service and ensuring our communities know who their Safer Neighbourhoods teams are, know how to contact them and how they can influence local priorities.

Hampshire Constabulary is running Operation Nemesis, a force-wide campaign targeting burglars operating within Hampshire and the Isle of Wight, this was originally due to finish at the end of December but will now continue until the end of March 2012, for more infomation click here.  We have had a number of successes in the Shirley area with offenders being arrested and convicted.  We have also seen a reduction in the number of dwelling burglaries and an increase in the number of offenders brought to justice.  We urge all our residents to ensure they secure their properties and to be vigilant at all times, but especially during the darker evenings of winter.

Your Safer Neighbourhoods teams are committed to improving the quality of life for residents. This includes working together with our partner agencies to reduce the number of homes being burgled; reduce violent crime and vehicle crime. We want to make sure we deal robustly with those crimes that affect peoples’ quality of life. This includes tackling things like criminal damage, anti-social behaviour (ASB) and motorcycle nuisance.

We are very aware of the impact that anti-social behaviour has on our communities, which is manifested through criminal damage and inconsiderate behaviour.  Your Safer Neighbourhoods teams run various Operations to try and reduce the instances of ASB including Op Early and Op Eden where alcohol is seized from youths.  They then receive an input from our PCSO’s regarding the dangers of drinking and it’s consequences. By targeting these things it is hoped that the community will feel safer in their area and have increased confidence that the police will target their concerns.

In conjunction with Southampton City Council and Southampton Football Club we have started up twice weekly sessions at the Oasis Academy, Green Lane, the aim is to divert youths away from causing anti-social behaviour and get them involved in team activities, football, boxing, zumba and DJ lessons are all available.  The project is known as “Saints Connect”, it is free and is on a Tuesday and Friday evening between 7.30 and 9.30pm.  From the end of January “Fighting Chance” will also be joining this initiative to provide youngsters with Judo training and if they finish the course, they will receive a certificate, a grading and get to keep their Judo outfit.

The front office at Shirley police station will be closing in March 2012 and we are in the process of ensuring we are available to all our community and there are many ways we seek to engage with everyone in all our neighbourhoods, including community panels, beat surgeries and street briefings and Your Voice Counts, to hear your concerns and listen to what you view are priorities, please see our your local area web page for details.

We continue to target the anti-social use of motorcycles within the Coxford, Millbrook and Lordshill areas in conjunction with Southampton City Council and the Forestry Commission and more operations are planned, we have had some real successes in this area, with offenders being brought to justice and motorcycles seized.  We have also seen the number of reported incidents reduce.

We will continue to look at ways of reducing offences such as damage and nuisance, working with partners including the City Council and schools to find ways to engage the local youngsters.  Several new Junior PCSO schemes have been started across Shirley in the past few months and more are on the way.

We are committed to making your area safer, but we rely on the support of the community and urge you to please contact us with any concerns you have about policing in the area. We also welcome any information or other help you are able to provide to help us prevent crime and reduce incidents of anti-social behaviour.     Police officers in Shirley have also joined the technology revolution and you can now follow us on Twitter – @ShirleyPolice     Click here to see what we're doing
