 Insp Doug Ashman

“My staff work hard to deliver a quality service to the people and businesses in the city centre. The Safer Neighbourhood teams have set up regular meetings to identify community concerns and priorities and there continues to be a healthy flow of information between organisations to combat crime.

Insp Phil Bates and Insp John McGonigle looks after licensing and our nightime economy in Southampton. The city has suffered in the past with some negative publicity around the levels of violence and how this is linked to our pubs and clubs. However, this is an area where we have made a lot of progress and there are a lot of exciting developments happening.

Street Pastors have become a regular part of Friday and Saturday nights, armed with their flip flops, fruit pastels and space blankets they are there to care, listen and help. They have made a significant contribution in making people feel secure and safe in the city at night. In addition they clear away glass and bottles, have assisted in reuniting vulnerable people with their friends and families on nights out and much more.

The 'In Case of Emergency' (ICE) bus service offers free advice, support and medical care to people in the city centre. It can be found in Above Bar Street opposite the Cenotaph on key dates throughout the year and during most weekends.

The city also now has a Night Time Economy Manager, Chris Caesar. Chris has a vital role in co-ordinating services and promoting the city. He has set up a Business Crime Reduction Partnership (BCRP) with the trade involved in the night time economy. Chris set up the city's first Yellow Card Scheme to identify trouble-makers so that police and door staff can take action against people causing problems in and around our pubs and clubs. With all of these exciting new initiatives we have seen a significant drop in violence and a lot of positive press about Southampton."
