There has been a restructure of policing across the city and this has led to an increase in the numbers of officers dedicated to Neighbourhood Policing.  St Denys has the following officers and staff on the team and headed by Inspector Mark Lewis and led by Sergeant Roger Boyles:

  • PC David King
  • PC Helena Temple
  • PC Ed Bullar
  • PC Nicole Dean
  • PC Ian Swan
  • PC Steve Blandford
  • SC Collins
  • SC Blake
  • SC Penman
  • PCSO Victoria Stuart
  • PCSO Collette Craddock

Locally, we work with your community to find out what matters most where you live. We will work with you and our partner agencies to agree the main priorities for the area and how we will work together to tackle them.

Safer Neighbourhood priorities for St Denys are:

  • Reduce drug activity and prostitution on the Priory Road Slipway
  • To address motorcycle use in the local area with regards to speed and accessing Horseshoe Bridge and the Community Centre.
  • Reduce fly tipping on the Slipway

These are the priorities that people in your local area have agreed with the Safer Neighbourhoods team. You can influence these priorities by contacting your team, attending a Police and Community Together (PACT) meeting or speaking to members of the team when you see them out and about.  The next PACT meeting was held on Tuesday, January 10 at 7pm at the  St Denys Community Centre, Priory Road contact the portswood SNT Team if you would like to attend..

Action in relation to your priorities

You said: To address motorcycle use in the local area with regards to speed and accessing Horseshoe Bridge and the Community Centre.

We did:  We have patrolled the location with a view to deter and to enforce restrictions. Advice and Fixed Penalty notices issued to offenders, priority remains and is carried over for this period.

You said:  Deal with anti-social behavior on the Boardwalk.

We Did: We have patrolled the area extensively with little or few issues dealt with. Enquiries made with Associated British Ports and Crown Estates as to who has responsibility for the river and its banks. At PACT meeting community stated this priority was no longer one that concerned them .

Crackdown on pavement cyclists

Officers from the Safer Neighbourhoods teams in the city centre regularly hold operations to stop and warn cyclists who they catch breaking the law. After the St Denys team attended several Neighbourhood Watch meetings, it has become very apparent that residents, especially the elderly are becoming very intimidated by the way some cyclists use the footpaths when they shouldn't. This is particularly a problem in shopping areas such as Portswood Broadway. Portswood Safer Neighbourhoods team will now be taking action against those we find breaking this law. We expect all cyclists to ride their bikes on the road and not the pavement unless it's a shared cycle path. Cyclists should also obey all road signs and have a front and rear light on when its dark. With the darker evenings approaching, we will ensure that this is the case. Officers, during the operations, will be stopping cyclists and educating and warning them about their actions. However, we will be handing out enforcement tickets if necessary especially to those who carry on breaking the law. Anyone caught cycling illegally on the pavement can be given a £30 fixed penalty notice.

Police have also launched an operation to reduce vehicle crime within the city. The team would like to remind residents not to leave valuables on display in vehicles and keep them locked. For more information to avoid becoming a victim of vehicle crime click here. The team regularly provided reassurance patrols at car hotspot locations and target suspected offenders.

Extra police reassurance patrols

These are taking place throughout the Bevois Valley, Empress Road Industrial Estate and surrounding areas. Tackling anti-social behaviour and drinking related nuisance is combated by working in partnership with local agencies including Southampton City Council and Hyde Housing Association. The Portswood Pubwatch scheme is an active initiative that helps to reduce drinking related concerns by police actively working together with pubs and clubs.

Local officers are working with businesses to address issues such as theft, shoplifting, anti-social behaviour, begging and street drinking. Business Watch is currently in place in Portswood and in Empress Road. A new scheme is also being introduced into Lodge Road and the surrounding area.

Taking action on drugs

We are always looking for information in relation to drug related activity in the city. If you are aware of any drug dealing in your area please report this to the police. Drug related crime has a detrimental effect on the community and often brings other acts of crime with it. If you have any information related to drugs activity contact police on 101 or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.

St Denys Youth Club
Launch of youth club at St Denys Community day in August 2008

St Denys Youth Club runs every Wednesday from 5.30 to 7.00pm. The club provides youths in the area with a positive environment including an array of activities tailored to their needs. It is also a great opportunity for police to engage with young people locally in a positive environment. The club has helped reduce crime and anti-social behaviour in the area and improved the police's relationship with the youngsters.  Funding for the club has been provided not only by Hampshire Constabulary but also, Southern Water, Hyde Housing,  and Western Challenge. We'd like to thank them for their backing.

Portswood Safer Neighbourhoods team will not tolerate drunken behaviour on the street. We have monitored the student nightlife and have achieved success here, seizing alcohol from those in the street and monitoring students as they return home in the early hours.

Crime prevention

A mini Crime Reduction and Environment week was held in April. This involved the Police working in Partnership with agencies to focus resources into the area of Lawn Road.  The aim was to tackle issues of concern reported by residents. High Visibility patrols were conducted by PCSOs and partner agencies carried out their own work to improve the local environment.

Forthcoming Beat Surgeries

Beat surgeries are continuing at the shops in Portswood Broadway - this is an ideal time to pop in and have an informal chat with members of the team. PCs and PCSOs representing Highfield, Bevois and Bannister and the St Deny's areas will be present. Come and tell us what is important to you in your neighbourhood, and play your part in setting local priorities.

The Safer Neighbourhoods team hold beat surgeries at Waitrose in Portswood Road between 11am and 1pm on alternate Saturdays.  If the weather is fine, officers will be outside the store.

Police and Community Together meetings have been introduced throughout Southampton and are currently held quarterly in each of the Portswood police neighbourhoods. The meetings are organised and chaired by officers from your Safer Neighbourhoods team and involve people who form part of a Key Individual Network (KIN). A KIN is a key person from the community with good contacts within that community. People currently involved include your local councillors, representatives from local resident associations, neighbourhood groups, local housing associations, care homes, housing societies, school head teachers, Police, Southampton City Council and Southampton University amongst others.

PACT meetings are a formal way to identify areas of concern for the local community. Local issues are discussed and from here we set the community priorities for the next three months. Your Safer Neighbourhoods team will then set action plans to tackle the issues and use multi agency strategies to collectively address the priority with an aim to achieve the objective and resolve the problem. If you feel you would like to get involved in this process and assist with your local issues, then please contact us. This is your opportunity to have a say on the priorities for your neighbourhood. If you are interested please send your e-mail to: portswood.snt@hampshire.pnn.police.uk

Details of the next meeting are shown under community priorities above.
