The policing pledge and your local priorities

Click here to read the national policing pledge, which sets out the service you can expect from your local police force.

Locally, we work with your community to find out what matters most where you live. We will work with you and our partner agencies to agree the main priorities for the area and how we will work together to tackle them.

Safer Neighbourhood priorities for St Deny's are:

  • Seek resolution to traffic concerns regarding the development of the bus depot in Portswood Road

  • Investigate incidents of ‘fly tipping’ and graffiti across the St Deny’s area

  • Increased Police Patrols to respond to drug misuse within Priory Road, Adelaide Road and Horseshoe Bridge

  • Directed police patrols in and around Bevois Valley, educate and deal with those students who engage in alcohol fuelled rowdy and inconsiderate behaviour as they leave and make their way home from late night licensed premises

These are the priorities that people in your local area have agreed with the Safer Neighbourhood team. You can influence these priorities by contacting your team, attending a meeting or speaking to members of the team when you see them out and about.

The next meeting of the Community Panel who decide the priorities is on January 20th 2010.

Action in relation to your priorities

Crackdown on pavement cyclists

Following the good reaction to the launch of the crackdown on people illegally cycling on the pavement in other parts of Southampton, Portwood SNT are also cracking down on the problem following complaints from residents.

Officers from the Safer Neighbourhoods Teams in the City centre regularly hold operations to stop and warn cyclist who they catch breaking the law and in the last week have handed out five enforcement tickets.

Beat Officer for St Deny's and Bevois Valley in Portswood David King said: “After attended several Neighbourhood Watch meetings it has become very apparent that residents, especially the elderly are becoming very intimidated by the way some cyclists use the footpaths when they shouldn’t.

“This is particularly a problem in shopping areas such as Portswood Broadway in Portswood Road and Burgess Road.

“We will now be taking action against those we find breaking this law. We expect all cyclists to ride their bikes on the road not the pavement unless it’s a shared cycle path.

“They should also obey all road signs and have a front and back lights on when it is dark”

“To start with in most cases officers during the operation we will be stopping cyclist and educating and warning them about their actions but they say they will be handing out enforcement tickets if necessary especially to those who carry on breaking the law.”

Anyone caught cycling illegally on the pavement can be given a £30 fixed penalty notice. Eight officers and PCSOs along with a member of the Council’s City Patrol Team have been be taking part in the operation.

Police have also launched an operation to reduce vehicle crime within the city. The team would like to remind residents not to leave valuables on display in vehicles and keep them locked. For more information to avoid becoming a victim of vehicle crime click here. The team regularly provided reassurance patrols at car hotspot locations and target suspected offenders.

Extra police reassurance patrols

These are taking place throughout the Bevois Valley, Empress Road Industrial Estate and surrounding areas. Tackling anti-social behaviour and drinking related nuisance is combated by working in partnership with local agencies including Southampton City Council and Hyde Housing Association. The Portswood Pubwatch scheme is an active initiative that helps to reduce drinking related concerns by police actively working together with pubs and clubs.

Local officers are working with businesses to address issues such as theft, shoplifting, anti-social behaviour, begging and street drinking. Business Watch is currently in place in Portswood and in Empress Road. A new scheme is also being introduced into Lodge Road and the surrounding area.

Taking action on drugs

We are always looking for information in relation to drug related activity in the city. If you are aware of any drug dealing in your area please report this to the police. Drug related crime has a detrimental effect on the community and often brings other acts of crime with it. If you have any information related to drugs activity contact police on 0845 045 45 45 or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111

Launch of Youth Club

Launch of youth club at St Denys Community day in August 2008

PCSO Colette Craddock supported by PCSO Lee SCOTT and working with other partner organisations has started a youth club in St Deny's Community Centre, Priory Road.  Collette has worked with a range of partners including Hyde Housing, Sports Development, The Community Centre and Southampton City Council to get the club up and running.

The club provides youths in the area with a positive environment including an array of activities tailored to their needs.  It is also a great opportunity for police to engage with young people locally in a positive environment. It is hoped the club will help cut crime and anti-social behaviour and give police a better relationship with youngsters. Funding for the club has been provided not only by Hampshire Constabulary but also, Southern Water, Hyde Housing,  and Western Challenge. We'd like to thank them for their backing.

The club runs every Wednesday from 5.30pm to 7pm.

High Visibility Patrols

Portswood Safer Neighbourhood team are actively tackling late night anti-social behaviour caused by people returning from the city centre and Bevois Valley by providing extra police presence at peak times. Dedicated foot patrols cover areas suffering from drunken behaviour, which is already proving successful. A considerable reduction in alcohol related nuisance has been seen during the early hours.
