The policing pledge and your local priorities
Click here to read the national policing pledge, which sets out the service you can expect from your local police force.
Locally, we work with your community to find out what matters most where you live. We will work with you and our partner agencies to agree the main priorities for the area and how we will work together to tackle them.
The current community priorities:
- Alcohol related anti-social behaviour involving young people in Alton
- Anti-social behaviour and criminal damage at Alton Cemetery
- Alcohol related anti-social behaviour in St Lawrence Church Yard
These are the priorities that people in your local area have agreed with the Safer Neighbourhoods team. You can influence these priorities by contacting your team, attending a meeting or speaking to members of the team when you see them out and about.
Any residents who witness anti-social behaviour in the area should contact police as soon as possible.

Action we have taken in relation to your priorities

We did:
We have had reported problems of teenagers gathering in the car park at Mount Pleasant. Patrols have been carried out on a regular basis and any youths have been moved on and alcohol seized. There is a new area that now seems to be being used, this is the Bell House in Turk Street, groups have been using these as a gathering place.
We pay particular attention to this area and again we will seize any alcohol found on those underage and move them on and make them clear any mess they have made.
In order to combat underage drinking in the town centre we have recently conducted test purchasing to test local stores to see whether they ask for I.D from youngsters buying alcohol. On this test we are happy to report that all stores complied with the current law.

We did:
Alton cemetery suffers with anti-social behaviour in evenings and over the weekends leading to criminal damage and anti-social behaviour for residents living in the area, particulary Spitalfields Road and damage to the cemetery.
We have increased high visibility patrols to the area, moving on groups and seizing alcohol where necessary. We arranged for our crime prevention officer to asses the area to see what further actions could be put into place to prevent anti-social behaviour. We are also in the process of liaising with partner agencies to try and put some of these into action.

We did:
Young people are gathering in the early evenings and drinking alcohol and being anti-social. This is a recently reported problem which we are currently monitoring and looking at ways to combat this. Local residents discussed this problem at their last forum which was attended by us and together we are looking at ways we can combat this as a community.
Offenders brought to justice
We will continue to run Operation Respect which is, and will continue to be, a key tool in delivering a reduction in anti-social behaviour and violence. Investigating incidents and bringing offenders to justice who engage in activities that undermine our community remains a high priority. Sadly there will always continue to be pockets of anti-social behaviour which we will continue to actively target. Anti-social behaviour and violence will not be tolerated and we will enforce the law where criminal behaviour is observed and identified.
We support the Neighbourhood Watch scheme and the new Holybourne StreetWatch scheme where members of our community are empowered to patrol their own streets.
The members are able to provide visible reassurance and a strong sense of community cohesion. Further information can be obtained so please get in touch if you would like to know more. We maintain and continue to develop strong relationships with local shops and licensed premises. Both the Shop Watch and Pub Watch schemes are operating very well and are supported by the new town centre CCTV system.
Did you know ?
The police have powers to disperse anyone over the age of 16 involved in or likely to be involved in alcohol related anti-social behaviour from an area for up to 48 hours.
PC Pete Kelly and Sergeant Ian Dugdale spent a day at Eggars School
PC Pete Kelly and Sergeant Ian Dugdale visited an Alton school last month. This was to assist year 11 students with their Btec science studies.
The students investigated a 'pretend murder' in the school using forensic science and investigation skills. The students successfully identified the 'killer' and they were awarded with a certificate of merit from the Alton Safer Neighbourhood Team.
Street Watch
Holybourne has recently launched its new Street Watch scheme. More than 40 people have registered their interest in patrolling their local area. There are now over ten experienced patrollers. For more information go to the Street Watch website.
