The Safer Neighbourhoods Team for Winklebury is:

PC Karen Binney (not pictured) and PCSO Keith Patching (right).

We are based out of the Basingstoke Police Office.

Locally, we work with your community to find out what matters most where you live. We will work with you and our partner agencies to agree the main priorities for the area and how we will work together to tackle them.

The three community priorities that have been identified for the neighbourhood are:

  • Anti-social behaviour in and around Watson Way and Wilmott Way.

  • Minor damage to vehicles around the Elmwood Way area

  • Drug related issues around the Winklebury Way area

These are the priorities that people in your local area have agreed with the Safer Neighbourhoods Team. You can influence these priorities by contacting your team, attending a meeting or speaking to members of the team when you see them out and about.

Action we are taking in relation to your priorities

You said: Prevent anti-social behaviour in and around Watson Way and Wilmott Way

We did:

We have received a number of complaints relating to teenagers causing a nuisance and general nuisance behaviour in and around the Watson Way shops area and Wilmott Way area. These reports range from youths being in possession of drink to youths smoking cannabis.

In response to this we have conducted high visibility patrols working with the local Community Safety Patrol Officers to tackle this issue. Details of those persistently causing a nuisance have had their details taken. We have also had some of them commit to Acceptable Behaviour Contracts (ABCs) to stop the incidents from re-occurring. For those not willing to engage, local police have been aiming to disrupt the main group's activities, seizing alcohol and searching for cannabis.

Combating anti-social behaviour remains a local priority; if you witness any bad behaviour in your area please contact us by calling 101 or 0845 045 45 45.

You said: Minor damage to vehicles around the Elmwood Way area

We did:

There has been an increase in vehicle crime in and around the Elmwood Way area. This can range from minor damage to more serious damage. These tend to occur on the weekends and in the early hours.

We have been conducting patrols of the car parking area in Elmwood Parade and along the Elmwood Way and Hawthorn Way areas. We will primarily be looking to disuade further acts of damage with these extra patrols, but will also be actively seeking offenders. Local officers will also be looking for any insecure vehicles or vehicles which have tempting items on display. When one is identified the registration number is noted and the driver’s details obtained. Once obtained we will either contact the owner of the vehicle by phone or send a letter with advice.

Since extra patrols began, there have been no further reports of damage to vehicles in that area.

You said: Drug related issues around the Winklebury Way area

We did:

We have been conducting patrols and actively looking to disrupt drugs activity in the Winklebury area. We have stopped and searched several people, all of whom were in possession of drugs. Arrests were made and the drugs seized and destroyed.

The Safer Neighbourhoods Team will continue patrolling with the aim of dealing with drugs offences robustly.

Offenders brought to justice

  • Man arrested for a violent disorder offence, he was also subsequently arrested for possession of cannabis.
  • Three men arrested for attempting to steal lead from the Three Barrels pub.
  • A police officer was assaulted by a woman whilst trying to help her in the Winklebury area. She was subsequently arrested.
  • A man was swiftly dealt with after being discovered smoking cannabis. The cannabis was seized and destroyed and the offender was given a cannabis warning.
  • A man was arrested for an assault after a very quick response to a call to police about a noise disturbance.

Do you have a bike?

We are reminding residents to take security measures to ensure they can identify their bicycle if it is stolen. A large number of stolen bicycles are recovered by police but some are never reunited with their rightful owners as they cannot be identified. Often people have not reported their cycles as stolen so the police have no record of them on the system.

How well could you describe your bicycle if it was stolen? You should keep a record of your cycle details, and keep it secure at all times to deter thieves. If you have recently bought a new bike you should take a photograph of it.

You can use your mobile phone to record an image and make sure you write down the serial number.

If you have recently had your bike stolen and have not reported it to us, please get in touch. We have recently recovered a number of bikes and are keen to trace their owners.

Under the force’s Safer Vehicles campaign, the  following advice is being offered to keep your cycle safe:

  • Marking the bicycle with your postcode and house number acts as a deterrent to theft and assists the police with identifying recovered property.
  • Always secure bicycles to a stand if available. Otherwise use a static object such as a lamp post or railing.
  • Secure your bicycle with a good quality cycle lock.
  • Quick release accessories are vulnerable. Consider replacing the lever with a security bolt or remove them when leaving the bicycle.
  • Lights are made detachable so remove them before a thief does.
  • Keep a note of the bicycle frame number. This will add identification should the cycle be recovered by the police.
  • Store a digital photo of the bicycle in a safe place.

Such evidence is key when police recover property.

Visit the Secured by Design website for more detailed information about property marking. For recommended locks and security devices the Sold Secure website has lists of makes and models.

It only takes a few seconds to steal one, so keep a record of your cycle details, and keep it secure to deter thieves.

  • Mark your bike with your postcode and house number
  • Keep a note of the bicycle frame number. This will add identification should the cycle be recovered by the police.
  • Take a photo of your bike on your mobile or with a camera and store it in a safe place. This will help us return your bike if and when it is recovered.
