Rooksdown

Your Safer Neighbourhoods Team is made up of police officers, special constables, police community support officers or volunteers. We are working together with the community and other partners to tackle local problems and improve the quality of life in your neighbourhood.

The Safer Neighbourhoods Team for Rooksdown is:

PCSO Tarren PorterPC Ian Hoile (far right) and PCSO Tarren Porter (left).

We are based out of the Old Basing Police Office.

Locally, we work with your community to find out what matters most where you live. We will work with you and our partner agencies to agree the main priorities for the area and how we will work together to tackle them.

The community priorities that have been identified for the neighbourhood are:

  • Anti-social behaviour in and around the Norrie Court and Canadian Way area
  • Stop vehicle crime at the hospital
  • Set up new Neighbourhood Watch schemes

These are the priorities that people in your local area have agreed with the Safer Neighbourhoods team. You can influence these priorities by contacting your team, attending a meeting or speaking to members of the team when you see them out and about.

Action we have taken in relation to your priorities

You said: Anti-social behaviour in and around the Norrie Court and Canadian Way area

We did:

We have been and continue to actively patrol the area on foot, bike and in car. We are working with partner agencies to resolve matters. These partner agencies include Sentinel Housing and the Hampshire County Council and Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council driven Community Safety Patrol Officers (CSPOs).

You may have already seen them actively patrolling on foot or in car in the area. Should you have any issues and have not had the chance to stop local police teams, any issues you have can be taken up with the local CSPOs who will notify and work together with local police teams to hopefully resolve the issue.

You said: Vehicle crime at the hospital

We did:

The CSPOs and us have been continuing patrols throughout the hospital site. Through our high visibility patrols and locating vulnerable vehicles we have noticed a dramatic decrease in incidents.

We will continue to carry out vulnerable vehicle checks at the hospital car parks. Where possible we advise drivers in person about vehicle security and if this is not possible, a letter is sent to them with suitable crime prevention advice.

We also regularly liaise with the hospital security and the car park security teams. You should always remember to properly secure your vehicle and never leave valuable items on show. These can be tempting for would be thieves but if it’s not there it can’t be stolen.

You said: Set up new Neighbourhood Watch schemes

We did:

We and the CSPOs have been actively working with the relevant people to continue to promote and start the Neighbourhood Watch scheme in Rooksdown.

There are currently Neighbourhood Watch schemes running in Rooksdown. However we are keen to increase this and have as many households as possible involved.

We will be holding a meeting with the CSPOs and current members of Neighbourhood Watch to consolidate and discuss expansion of the scheme throughout the Rooksdown area.

Neighbourhood Watch allows us to work closely with people in the community and makes information sharing easier and more direct.

We can quickly update you about any incidents that happen on the beat and also circulate important crime prevention advice. It also gives you another way to contact us and raise any issues or provide information about suspicious activity. If you would like to get involved please contact us.

Justice Seen Justice Done

Following reports of children using chalk to graffiti the pathways near one of the pavilions, one child was stopped and spoken to and his parents informed. Reports of anti-social use of mini-motos have decreased significantly but we did recently stop a rider who was given a warning.

There have been several reports of children throwing stones at passing cars at various locations throughout Rooksdown. Although there were several children involved, two of them were identified and they were spoken to in the presence of their parents.

Operation Sheffield was a Basingstoke wide operation aimed at targeting drug use and supply across Basingstoke. One of the addresses raided was in Rooksdown and we continue to work hard to rid the area of drugs. An abusive man was escorted off of hospital grounds by police, no arrests were made and the man was given suitable advice.

PC Hoile is still in the process of trying to set up a Special Constables' scheme at Basingstoke and North Hampshire Hospital. The idea would be to recruit hospital staff to become Special Constables. They are the largest employer in Basingstoke and the scheme would benefit both the hospital and local policing in the town.

Safer Vehicles
Please take a few moments to read our advice below:

  • Don’t leave anything in your car – if it’s not there, then it can’t be stolen
  • Choose a stereo that can be removed and make sure you take it with you!
  • You should also mark it with your registration number or postcode, in case it is stolen.
  • Thieves aren’t picky, so don’t leave even low-value items.
  • Often thieves will smash and grab first and look later to see if what they’ve stolen is valuable.
  • Don’t hide it – if you hide items under the seat or in the glove box, chances are someone will have watched you.
  • If you cannot avoid leaving something in your car, put it in your boot before you begin your journey.
  • Don’t leave valuables in your car even for a minute – it only takes a thief a few seconds to smash a window and get what they want, so don’t take the chance.
  • Your car isn’t safe on your driveway – nearly half of all incidents where items are stolen from cars happen when they are parked overnight, close to the owner’s home.
  • Don’t leave your house keys or anything with your address on it in your vehicle - someone could steal your keys and then let themselves into your home.
  • Always secure your car.
  • Always lock your car and wind your windows up, even if you are just posting a letter or going into a petrol station.
  • If you are stationary in traffic, keep your doors locked and don’t wind your windows too far down – someone could reach in and try to grab something off your passenger seat.

Come and tell us what is important to you in your neighbourhood, and play your part in setting local priorities.

Do you have a bike?

How well could you describe your bike?

It only takes a few seconds to steal one, so keep a record of your cycle details, and keep it secure to deter thieves.

  • Mark your bike with your postcode and house number
  • Keep a note of the bicycle frame number. This will add identification should the cycle be recovered by the police.
  • Take a photo of your bike on your mobile or with a camera and store it in a safe place. This will help us return your bike if and when it is recovered.

Please complete the attached Bike Safe form, email it to us and store the details safely.
