The Safer Neighbourhoods Team for Brighton Hill is:

PC Sarah Stokes (right) and PCSO Catherine Haw (left).

We are based out of Basingstoke Police Station.

Locally, we work with your community to find out what matters most where you live. We will work with you and our partner agencies to agree the main priorities for the area and how we will work together to tackle them.

The three new community priorities for Brighton Hill will now be:

  • Tackle anti-social behaviour around The Parade, Brighton Hill

  • Tackle speeding offences on Gershwin Road

  • Target drug related issues

These are the priorities that people in your local area have agreed with the Safer Neighbourhoods Team. You can influence these priorities by contacting your team, attending a meeting or speaking to members of the team when you see them out and about.

Action we have taken in relation to your priorities

You said: Tackle anti-social behaviour around The Parade, Brighton Hill

We did:

There have only been a few reports to police concerning groups of youths outside the parade - these reports seem to refer to a group on skateboards causing problems (as opposed to the other groups that congregate in the area). Regular patrols have been carried out by police and partner agencies with a few to identifying the youths involved and taking positive action.

You said: Tackle speeding offences on Gershwin Road
We did:

Speeding by commuters during the day and motorbikes during the evenings has been identified as a community priority. The area has been patrolled at various times during the evenings but no incidents have been reported. Officers from the Roads Policing Unit (RPU) were stationed along Brighton Way around the same time where several drivers were issued tickets or were referred to the driver referral scheme.

You said: Target drug related issues

We did:

Regular patrols are being carried out in the area by police and partner agencies providing a visible presence in the area. A small amount of activity has been witnessed so we will continue these patrols and robustly deal with any offences we find.

Offenders brought to justice

The last three months have been very successful for bringing offenders to justice. One of our priorities is anti-social behaviour and whilst this will always be a problem, recently we have noticed two youths that have been coming to our attention for causing anti-social behaviour. I have referred both youths to the council for an Acceptable Behaviour Contract.

We have also completed a dog owner control contract after receiving reports from members of the community of a dog repeatedly being aggressive in public. Whilst on the subject of dogs we have one owner that has been reported for summons for his dog being dangerously out of control in a public place and a prohibited breed.

Drugs are another of our priorities and we have issued one cannabis warning and arrested another man for possession of cannabis.

Speeding is our final priority and three people have been reported for driving offences and are in the process of going through the courts.

Neighbourhood Watch schemes

Brighton Hill is very short of Neighbourhood Watch Schemes. We are currently setting one up in Boyce Close if there is enough interest. Anyone who wishes to be a coordinator for a scheme in their road, street or close please get in contact with us.

There are many advantages of being in a Neighbourhood Watch scheme:

  • Discount offered by some insurance companies
  • A greatly reduced fee to purchase a unique  ‘Smartwater’ property marking kit at £15
  • Opportunities to receive funding for projects and local initiatives
  • Support by the police and partner agencies – includes crime updates and newsletters
  • Crime prevention advice and information
  • Neighbourhood Watch signs (they deter crime and reassure the community)

Neighbourhood Panel Meetings

We are currently organising a new panel meeting in Brighton Hill. Here we discuss the main issues around Brighton Hill and how we can go about tackling them. Various agencies and key individuals for Brighton Hill will attend and this is where the new priorities for Brighton Hill will be decided.

How you can take action

Do you have a bike?

How well could you describe your bike?

It only takes a few seconds to steal one, so keep a record of your cycle details, and keep it secure to deter thieves.

  • Mark your bike with your postcode and house number
  • Keep a note of the bicycle frame number. This will add identification should the cycle be recovered by the police.
  • Take a photo of your bike on your mobile or with a camera and store it in a safe place. This will help us return your bike if and when it is recovered.

Please complete the attached Bike Safe form, email it to us and store the details safely.

Beat Surgeries

We will decide at the Neighbourhood Panel meeting when the beat surgeries will be so please keep an eye locally for times and dates. This is a good time for you to tell us your problems and to discuss crime prevention so please make the most of us and come and talk to us.

If you have issues that affect you and the community then please stop and speak to us if you see us out and about. If you have any information that can assist the police and you want to remain anonymous please contact the Crimestoppers charity on 0800 555 111.

The following beat surgeries are to be held at ASDA in Brighton Hill:

  • Friday, June 17 from 6pm until 7.30pm
  • Tuesday, July 12 from 12pm until 1.30pm

We look forward to meeting the local residents of Brighton Hill. We want to speak to residents who have any community concerns or issues that we can help with, or even those that just want to come and say hello. If we aren't made aware of the problems that residents have, then we can’t help to tackle them.
