Bramley, Silchester and Sherfield on Loddon

Your Safer Neighbourhoods Team is made up of police officers, special constables, police community support officers or volunteers. We are working together with the community and other partners to tackle local problems and improve the quality of life in your neighbourhood.

Last updated on: Thursday, June 2

The Safer Neighbourhoods Team for Bramley, Silchester and Sherfield on Loddon is:

PC Mandy Jewell

PC Jewell is based out of Tadley Police Station.

Locally, we work with your community to find out what matters most where you live. We will work with you and our partner agencies to agree the main priorities for the area and how we will work together to tackle them.

The community priorities are:

  • Tackle speeding in the villages by regular use of speed enforcement visits and working with the Roads Policing Unit and Community Reassurance Team

  • Prevent non-dwelling burglaries

  • Tackle the problem of fly tipping in the Bramley area

These are the priorities that people in your local area have agreed with the Safer Neighbourhoods Team. You can influence these priorities by contacting your team, attending a meeting or speaking to members of the team when you see them out and about.

We aim to achieve our priorities by carrying out regular high visibility patrols, providing education through home visits and presentations, parish magazines, community notice boards and these web pages.

Action we have taken in relation to your priorities

You said: Tackle speeding in the villages by regular use of speed enforcement visits and working with the Roads Policing Unit and Community Reassurance Team

We did:

Myself and colleagues were out at the end of May in Bramley, Sherfield on Loddon and Mortimer West End. The results ranged from a verbal warning to one being reported for summons (travelling 50 mph in 30 mph limit)

There are plans for a Community Speed Watch scheme. A colleague has a meeting at the beginining of June and will then send something out to all parish councils policed from Tadley.

You said: Prevent non-dwelling burglaries

We did:

Due to the number of incidents over the last three years letters have been sent out to those who have been a victim of crime in relation to shed, garage and out building burglaries. We are looking at the service given by the police and what action has been taken by the victim since the incident and whether anything else can be done to try and prevent this type of crime.

If you are one of those victims and have not yet responded, we would really appreciate your reply.

You said: Tackle the problem of fly tipping in the Bramley area

We did:

There continues to be a problem in this area. On receipt of any reports the police will liaise with the relevant department at the council to see what action can be taken.

Other issues

In relation to crime in the area, burglary non dwellings are still the main offence, with tools being the main item stolen. There were also five dwelling burglaries recently: entry was gained by either smashing a door panel or forcing a window.  In three incidents jewellery was stolen. Enquiries are in hand by the Priority Crime Team in Basingstoke about possible suspects.

Offenders brought to justice

The Roads Policing Unit is active in our area and have given seven verbal warnings to drivers speeding at The Street junction with Minchens Lane in Bramley. Two fixed penalty notices were also issued to drivers for speeding between 44mph and 48mph.

A teenager has been identified after reports of anti-social behaviour and criminal damage at the play area in Sherfield on Loddon. Enquiries are ongoing and we would ask people to contact us if they have information about similar incidents.

Summer events

Nine areas across the borough will again experience free evening activities for 11 to 17 year olds to get involved in. Click here for more details.

Neighbourhood Watch schemes

We are in the process of setting up two more schemes, one in Sherfield and one in Bramley. If anyone is interested in setting up a scheme in their road/area please let us know.

Crime Prevention Advice

The north east of Hampshire has recently seen a rise in the number of distraction burglaries being committed. There have also been incidents of burglaries where offenders have gained access via uPVC doors.

Please can you circulate the below advice and ask people to report any suspicious activity to us so we can reduce the number of incidents. If you have any concerns about a caller to your door, do not let them in and call the police immediately on 999.

Also, please keep an eye on any elderly and vulnerable neighbours and report any suspicious callers.
The following Safer Homes advice can help you avoid becoming a victim of this sort of crime:

  • Burglars can fool you into thinking they are genuine callers. Don't be the one who lets them in. If in doubt, keep them out!
  • Stop – are you expecting anyone to call on you?
  • Do you know the person at the door? Don’t be misled by what appear to be genuine reasons for calling on you.
  • Check – A genuine caller will carry identification and will be happy to wait outside while you check it. Remember to source your own number for the company they are claiming to be from, don’t accept a number from the caller.
  • Chain – fit a door chain or spy hole so that you can speak to callers or check who they are without opening the door fully.
  • If you turn anyone away from your home because they could not provide you with a genuine reason for being there, or you are suspicious of callers in your area, contact the police!
  • UPVC doors can often be easily opened if they are not locked with the key from the inside. Simply lifting the handle does not completely secure the door.
  • Offenders have been known to put their arm through a letterbox or cat flap and use a tool to push the handle down and gain entry to homes.
  • It is important that people understand that these doors have to be double locked to be properly secure. Deadlock your doors with the key – don’t just lift up the handle.
  • Make use of all door and window locks fitted in your home.
  • Consider getting a letter box deflector.
  • Keep house keys upstairs or store them near the door out of sight for easy access in an emergency.
  • Keep your car keys away from the front door and store them somewhere safe.
  • Keep handbags out of sight.

SmartWater

SmartWater has been offered to all schools across the area.

Poaching and hare coursing

Poaching and hare coursing is another issue in the area. Again we are working in partnership with gamekeepers, water bailiffs and the Environment Agency.  There is a local action plan in place if incidents are reported.
