Neighbourhood Panel

In addition to ‘Your Voice Counts’ as a means to obtain residents' thoughts on what our priorities should be, we are considering setting up a Neighbourhood Panel.

The panel would ideally consist of various members of the community who either have an active interest in what is happening in the area, or could assist in solving problems in some way.

Are you a local landowner, gamekeeper, shop keeper or perhaps involved with a school?

You don’t have to even be linked to something or somewhere specific on the beat – as long as you feel you could offer a valuable input to the panel and decide what the police and our partner agencies should be focusing on in this area.

If you think you would like to be involved, or would like to learn more, please contact us on the details at the bottom of this page.

Locally, we work with your community to find out what matters most where you live. We will work with you and our partner agencies to agree the main priorities for the area and how we will work together to tackle them.

The main policing priorities for the area are:

  • Continue to carry out high visibility patrols, in both vehicles and on foot, to reassure the community and to prevent crime and anti-social behaviour

  • To tackle speeding by regularly using speed enforcement visits through working with the Roads Policing Unit and the Community Reaction Team

  • Maintaining close contact with the parish councils, and other interest groups in the community, including Neighbourhood Watch

These are the priorities that people in your local area have agreed with the Safer Neighbourhoods team.

You can influence these priorities by contacting your team, attending a meeting or speaking to members of the team when you see them out and about.

Country Watch

Please click here for more information about the Country Watch scheme in this area.

We are looking to set up Landscape Watch. This is to advise those with landscape, gardening and tree surgery businesses of crimes where gardening equipment is stolen, and provide them with a means to identify their own property.

Please make contact if you would like to be involved. We had an enormous amount of such thefts last winter, and want to do everything we can to prevent a repeat performance this year.

Action we have taken in relation to your priorities

You said: Continue to carry out high visibility patrols, in both vehicles and on foot, to reassure the community and to prevent crime and anti-social behaviour

We did:

We carry out regular high visibility patrols to help reduce and deter crime. These are targeted at hotspots where it has been identified that anti-social behaviour and criminal damage often takes place.

We would ask you to contact us if you witness a crime or any other suspicious activity in your neighbourhood. We can then target our patrols appropriately.

Owners of Land Rovers, particularly the 'Defender' type, are asked to be on their guard as nationally thieves are targeting these vehicles to export to other countries where parts for the vehicles are in short supply.

For the first six months of this year 289 Land Rover Defenders (new and old) have been stolen.  Whilst the majority of the thefts have been in the Midlands and the north of the UK there is a concern that this may spread to our area.

Owners should be aware of the risk and take any necessary precautions in relation to securing their vehicles and enhancing any security systems that they may have.

Around one million pounds worth of plant and construction equipment is stolen every week in the UK.  There are various steps which can be taken to reduce the chances of becoming a victim, including state-of-the-art marking/tagging technology secured in and on the machinery.

Various products are available under the CESAR scheme (Construction and Agricultural Equipment Security and Registration)  including Unique Plant Identification Plate, Glass Tag,  Self Adhesive Tag, Datadots ®, Datatag DNA . A typical piece of machinery will cost £110 - £130 to have the scheme installed. We can provide you with full details if you e-mail or call the team.

Our Business Watch scheme is now up and running.  If you are a local business, big or small, if you send us your e-mail, we will send you updates about relevant crimes occurring in your area, suspicious activity, and advice on crime prevention – rather like Neighbourhood Watch for businesses!

You said: To tackle speeding by regularly using speed enforcement visits through working with the Roads Policing Unit and the Community Reaction Team

We did:

We work with our colleagues in the Roads Policing Unit who carry out regular patrols in the area. You have identified speeding as one of our priorities and we ensure that the speed limits are enforced and anyone who breaks the law while driving is dealt with appropriately.

We are currently working with Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council’s Senior Engineer in Neighbourhood Development regarding speed enforcement and calming measures across the beat. The results of data obtained will help us to identify areas where we can devote resources to solving this issue.

We also have a number of dates in the coming weeks to work alongside the Roads Policing Unit ourselves, so keep your eyes out for us in those 30mph limits.

You said: Maintaining close contact with the parish councils, and other interest groups in the community, including Neighbourhood Watch

We did:

We have set up a Text Alert Service whereby if something suspicious is happening when we are on duty, we can send a text to those on the distribution list, asking them to keep their eyes out and let us know if they spot what we are looking for. Please provide your mobile phone number to us if you would like to receive these texts.

We regularly update our communities on incidents and upcoming events. We would encourage you to get involved with Neighbourhood Watch. It makes it easier for us to share information and crime prevention advice with you.

It also means you can contact us quickly and report any suspicious activity you may have witnessed. We also work closely with the parish councils in the area to address your needs. If you want to get involved in the Neighbourhood Watch scheme please contact us.

New schemes are currently underway in Ramsdell and Wolverton, so do forward your details to us if you live in those areas and would like to receive our ‘alert’ e-mails of what is happening as it happens.

Most parish councils are in the process of holding their Annual General Meetings or Annual Assemblies and we have arranged to be at all four AGMs on the beat to report on the past year’s occurrences.

Offenders brought to justice

Just after midnight on June 26  two men were seen on the roof of Heath End Village Hall.  One made his escape, and the other was arrested and charged and will be appearing in court for attempting to steal lead from the roof.

Sherborne St. John annual fete

PCSO Sabrina Smith from The Overton Safer Neighbourhoods team and Sergeant Brendan Close of the dog unit kindly assisted me at the Sherborne St. John last month on Saturday, June 19.

The two pups are Ritzy and Ronnie, they are four-month-old sisters who are currently being 'puppy walked' and socialised by other dog handlers. They will begin their training as general purpose dogs when they are older. Also in attendance was Buster the rottweiller, who is due to retire in September, but he was a bit camera-shy, as well as grumpy!

I was also in attendance, doing 'thumbprint' fingerprint cards for the kids which went down quite well too.

How you can take action

Look out for your local beat team and the vehicle for your chance to discuss any concerns you have, or even just come and say hello. We want to meet as many of the local residents as possible.
