Ch Insp Andy BottomleyChief Inspector Andy Bottomley is responsible for the Basingstoke and Deane district.

Ch Insp Bottomley came to the area after three years as district commander of Bitterne in Southampton.

He has enjoyed a variety of roles throughout his policing career, particularly within the local area.

In 1992 he was promoted to sergeant at Fleet and a year later moved to Basingstoke, where he performed different roles including custody and patrol.

In 1997, he was appointed as the community beat sergeant for Basingstoke town and oversaw the merger of the beats with the council ward areas and increased the number of officers on neighbourhood teams.

Three years later, Ch Insp Bottomley was promoted to inspector for firearms operations and was responsible for the delivery of firearms training across Hampshire and the Isle of Wight before his promotion to chief inspector in 2005.

Under his command at Bitterne, his team achieved an 18 per cent reduction in total crime and an improvement in the crime detection rate.

Ch Insp Bottomley also led work on the reduction of weapon-related violence and is particularly proud of the successes in this area, achieved through strong partnership working. He is also an accredited football commander and a force firearms commander.

In the performance year 2010- 11, Basingstoke and Deane had 750 fewer victims of crime, which was a reduction of 6 per cent on all crime. All violence, a priority for the district and the Basingstoke and Deane partnership, saw a 12 per cent reduction. Violence with injury saw an 18 per cent reduction. Damage has seen a 22 per cent reduction and there has also been a reduction in burglary.

Around a third of all crimes were detected (32 per cent) and satisfaction of people for the whole experience is the highest amongst the districts at 71 per cent. This has increased steadily from April 2010 when it was 63 per cent.

As a comparison compared to two years ago, all crime has fallen by 2,151 offences or 17 per cent.

The priority is to continue to focus on the town centre and in particular violence related to the night time economy. A range of measures have been introduced with the support of partners, including the Basingstoke and North Hampshire Hospital, Street Pastors and Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council.

This work has helped contribute to a reduction in violence offences and helped make the borough a safer place to live, work in and visit.
