Inspector Nick Heelan
One of the Isle of Wight’s most experienced police officers is pledging to develop closer connections with the community to catch criminals in the island’s capital. Nick Heelan has become the new sector inspector for Newport, returning to the Isle of Wight after two years with Hampshire Constabulary’s Major Crime team. Inspector Heelan has spent the past eleven years as a detective with the force for the island and Hampshire. He led the investigation to find, arrest and charge two men responsible for a daylight armed robbery at Benzie jewellers in Cowes in July 2009. Detective Inspector Heelan was also the senior investigating officer for an investigation into the murder of a musician at the Sands Hotel in Sandown on the island in the summer of 2009. A man was charged and later convicted by a jury during a crown court trial where a judge sentenced him to 11 years in prison.
Inspector Heelan said: "It’s been a tremendous privilege to work as a senior detective, a position I always aspired to hold when I joined the force. I’m now keen to bring my considerable experience of CID to neighbourhood policing. Tackling the issues facing the island’s capital town is a challenge I relish, and it’s vital we’re working at the heart of the community to ensure our efforts have the maximum effect on cutting crime. I want as many members of the public from all backgrounds to have the confidence to report information to us. We are not complacent in our commitment to maintain an active visible presence in every neighbourhood. Officers, PCSOs and Special Constables in Newport will keep criminals under constant pressure to disrupt and detect their activities. This approach proved successful in gathering evidence against the island’s most prolific burglar Clive Richardson who was jailed earlier this year after stealing from homes across the island, including Newport. Our main focus remains on stopping and solving more burglaries and thefts as part of Hampshire Constabulary’s Operation Nemesis this winter. We’re striving to raise awareness amongst residents of what they can do to protect their homes and personal property, particularly around Christmas time when thieves will look for easy opportunities to steal valuable goods. Recent analysis suggests many of our burglaries take place when doors and windows are left open. Some burglaries only last a matter of seconds because a thief walking past a house can see a valuable item and take it, simply by reaching through an open window or door. Effective policing of pubs and clubs in Newport is another key element to keeping crime down. We encourage and support the responsible attitude displayed by the vast majority of licensees in the town, but we will not shy away from taking tough action to reduce opening hours or close premises if the management of a club or pub persistently fail in their obligations to protect the public from harm and disorder. Crime in Newport town centre and Carisbrooke has fallen by 18 per cent so far since April 2011 compared to the same eight months of 2010. This trend will only continue with the solid support of a community that trusts the decisions and actions we take thanks to their information. There is an added sense of purpose to policing here because many officers including myself live within the neighbourhoods we serve, and it’s my priority to ensure this mutual respect is reinforced."

Inspector Terry Clawson
My name is Terry Clawson and I'm the police inspector for the West Wight. My 34 years living on the Island have seen lots of changes. One aspect of Island life which has remained firm is the sense of community, particularly in our rural towns and villages. I grew up on the Island and after leaving school worked in a High Street bank. In 1999 I decided to change careers and joined the police, initially commuting daily to Portsmouth and subsequently Southampton city centres. On the Island I’ve worked in Ryde, Newport and Cowes and planned our major events policing before moving to the Safer Neighbourhoods role. Crime rates are one of the lowest in the country but I understand the significant impact that offences committed in our rural areas can have on individuals and businesses. I have an outstanding team of officers based in Yarmouth and together we are committed to making our area an even safer place to live, work, grow up and grow old. We are here to deal with the criminals, bullies and people behaving anti-socially. Our website www.hampshire.police.uk lists our neighbourhood priorities - all chosen by local people. Please contact us on 101 or westwight.snt@hampshire.pnn.police.uk if you have concerns or if you would like more information about what we are doing in your community.
