Sailors support smarter solutions for Solent security
by Duncan Smith
Sailors in Yarmouth Harbour on the Isle of Wight are showing their support for the police’s efforts to prevent crime affecting the marine community.

The island’s mobile police office was at Yarmouth Harbour on Saturday, July 24, 2010 with PCSOs Mike Thornton, Justin Keefe and Cat Quinn from the West Wight Safer Neighbourhoods team and PCs Nick McKinnon and PC Bob Clowes from Hampshire Constabulary’s Marine Unit.
Police gave advice on how the property marking system SmartWater can deter and detect thefts from boats. 31 SmartWater kits were purchased by boat owners in the space of just four hours during the event in Yarmouth.

Marine Unit officers gave information about Project Kraken; Hampshire Constabulary’s award-winning campaign to prevent crime and terrorism by encouraging information and intelligence from people who use the sea and rivers. An extra 17 sailors registered their details for the scheme, which is the marine equivalent of Neighbourhood Watch. For more information about Project Kraken, click on this link: http://www.hampshire.police.uk/kraken

SmartWater is a liquid that can mark someone’s valuable property with a unique DNA-style forensic code. These codes are stored on a secure database together with the owners’ details. SmartWater fluoresces yellow and green under UV light allowing recovered items to be linked to their owner, and the thieves who stole them.
The Isle of Wight Community Safety Partnership, which introduced SmartWater to the island in 2008, has given advice to sailors at a number of harbours on crime prevention tools and techniques designed to deter thieves, and protect valuable property on board boats.
Police Community Support Officer (PCSO) Mike Thornton from the West Wight Safer Neighbourhoods team said: “We were pleased with all the interest expressed by boat owners during Saturday’s event. Police are keen to work with the community at every opportunity so we can raise awareness of how to prevent and solve crime. The support of Yarmouth Harbour Commissioners is greatly appreciated in helping to send out a clear message that crime against the marine community will not be tolerated on our island.”

Sailors visiting Yarmouth Harbour on Saturday included Terence Kelsey of Yarmouth. Mr Kelsey said: “I’m aware some thieves steal to order because of the valuable equipment stored on board. Crime prevention ideas like this are great and I know my boat now has extra security.” For more information about SmartWater, log onto www.saferwight.org.uk

You said.....Stop speeding on the main road through Yarmouth, on Ningwood Hill, and at Calbourne crossroads.
We did....There are regular speed checks on routes where residents have complained. Motorists caught breaking the speed limit will face prosecution and education. Residents are invited to join officers so there is a better understanding of perceived speeding.

More action taken by the Rural West Safer Neighbourhoods team
(2009)
Our ‘Lights On’ burglary prevention campaign continued during the winter. Over 300 timer switches were given to residents who are making their homes safer. There were two house burglaries in this beat area between April and December 2009. This is a reduction compared to the five burglaries reported during the same time in 2008. Please contact us for a timer switch to help deter burglars targeting your property when you’re out. Overall, there were more than 50 fewer crimes in this beat between April and December 2009 compared to two years ago.

PCSO Cath Quinn hands a timer switch to Councillor Stuart Dyer during the Lights On campaign at Yarmouth Police Station, October 2009
Neighbourhood Watch
PCSO Justin Keefe is assisting the creation and organisation of new Neighbourhood Watch schemes in Blackwater, Merstone, Arreton, Shorwell, Rookley, Chillerton and Yafford. Neighbourhood Watch is an important part of the Rural West Safer Neighbourhoods Team's contribution to Operation Nemesis, Hampshire Constabulary's campaign to prevent and reduce burglaries. Neighbourhood Watch co-ordinators and members are given crime prevention advice, and informed about burglary trends in their area.

Crime prevention at community event
Rural West SNT officers and PCSOs attend community events on a regular basis to give free crime prevention advice and support.
