Action we have taken in relation to your priorities
You wanted us to tackle anti-social behaviour and criminal damage
The Northgate Safer Neighbourhoods Team regularly work with their partner agencies, in order to tackle the issues that affect you and your community. Our close relationship with the City Council enables us to work alongside Accredited Community Support Officers and Neighbourhood Wardens in order to maximise the patrols in specific areas, and to deal with any issues before they escalate.. During the previous year, we have targeted a number of areas, where issues were raised, such as Garbett Road, Winnall Manor Park, South Wonston and also dealt with anti-social behaviour in the St Giles Hill area.
The play area at Orams Arbor attracted a significant amount of attention, but through combining our joint resources within the Winchester Community Safety Partnership, the issues have been identified and addressed, and the problems resolved.
In Weeke, the area around the Stoney Lane shops became a hot spot for anti-social behaviour. This problem was identified and tackled by targeting the young people involved. By closer working with their parents, making arrests and working alongside Winchester City Council's Acceptable Behaviour co-ordinator, there has been a significant decrease in relation to calls in this area for rowdy or inconsiderate behaviour. We also dealt with an offender who damaged a bus shelter in Sparsholt, who subsequently paid for the damage caused.
In relation to anti-social behaviour involving vehicles, a number of individuals in the area have been warned about the manner of their driving and in some cases have had their vehicles seized.
Your local team has worked with Winchester City Council and Housing Associations to deal with nuisance neighbours and families across the Northgate area. Quite often, early intervention is successful, and avoids the need for formal action to be taken. We would encourage the use of mediation, but on rare occasions, further action is required. Where the behaviour of residents is of a continual, and anti-social manner, then this causes distress to the other residents, and we will tackle this in order to ensure that our neighbourhoods remain a safe and pleasant place to live. Recently, working with the Housing Department, we were actively involved in the eviction of persons from Water Lane in Winchester, which has enabled a better quality of life to local residents.
We also play a key part in maintaining the running of open spaces within Northgate. We work with several partnership agencies to ensure that playing fields remain safe places for children to play and enjoy, without the fear of crime, litter, or congregations of intimidating groups. This is facilitated by regular patrolling by Police officers, Accredited community Support officers, Neighbourhood wardens and Specials, dealing with any issues that sometimes arise. We also welcome your comments and any further reports of such nuisance behaviour.
The team have a number of current plans to tackle ongoing issues, and these will be completed in the forthcoming months
You wanted us to tackle drug abuse
The team have been working closely with the community and increased our patrols. These increased patrols, and the execution of warrants in the area, have led to individuals being found in possession of illegal drugs, and the discovery of cannabis factories. We intend to continue working robustly with all drug crime, and will play an active part in the disruption of the drugs supply network and the investigation of all drugs-related offences. We always welcome any intelligence on drug dealing, suspicious persons or drug activity. Any information can be made anonymously by telephoning Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
We have also been involved in a number of smaller operations targeting drug use, such as at a local college, where a number of offenders were dealt with.
You wanted us to deal with traffic issues
Traffic issues, such as speeding, are a key priority within a lot of communities in the Northgate area. We are fortunate to have an ex-traffic officer, who is able to offer expert guidance on all such matters. We also regularly undertake random roadside traffic operations, targeting speeding motorists.
We intend to work closely with our colleagues in the Roads Policing Unit and continue to deliver such operations, thereby ensuring the continued safety of all residents within the community, as well as dealing firmly with those breaking the law.
You wanted us to increase the number of Neighbourhood Watch schemes
Work in this area continues and we have recently been successful in setting up Neighbourhood Watch schemes in South Wonston, (Waverley Drive, West Hill Road South, Blackthorn Crescent, Lower Road), Kings Worthy (Elan Close), Crawley, Dean and Headbourne Worthy , which was awarded the Green Neighbourhood watch sign from the National Neighbourhood Watch Association.
We are also trying to increase the number of streets signed up the No Cold Calling Zones. We have been working alongside Trading Standards, and have recently set up schemes in South Wonston (Downs Rd, Waverley Drive, Goldfinch Way, Gratton Close), Headbourne Worthy, Crawley, Kings Worthy (The Pastures and Harwood Place) and Rosewarne Court in Hyde.
The Neighbourhood Watch movement is the single largest voluntary organisation in England and Wales, with a presence of six million members. It aims to cut crime, the opportunities for crime and anti-social behaviour. It also provides reassurance to you, as local residents, whilst encouraging closer communities and good relations. The benefits of joining such a scheme are plentiful. Not only does it provide greater confidence and reassurance, but often means that home insurance companies often reduce the cost of policies. Should anyone be interested in setting up, or joining such a scheme, please contact us and we will be able to help.
You wanted us to deal with poaching and hare coursing
This is an ongoing issue in the rural area, particularly Micheldever, Sparsholt, Crawley and rural villages to the North of the City. We are working in partnership with local farmers, gamekeepers, water bailiffs and the Environment Agency. We are targeting specific locations at specific times, when these offences are being committed. There is a Force action plan in place if incidents are reported to the Police. Further action is planned for the forthcoming months.
