Your local priorities

Locally, we work with your community to find out what matters most where you live. We will work with you and our partner agencies to agree the main priorities for the area and how we will work together to tackle them.

Meon Valley South Safer Neighbourhoods priorties are:

  • Criminal damage and anti-social behaviour in Denmead at Southwick Road, Hambledon Road, The Willows, The Meadow, Park Road and Ashling Park Road.
  • Criminal damage and anti-social behaviour at Whiteley in:  Rosemary Gardens,  Thyme Avenue,  Saffron Way and Maple Rise and the Meadowside recreation ground.
  • Speeding traffic and vehicle related nuisance around Southwick village.
  • Speeding traffic along the Southwick Road, B2177.
  • Knowle/Wickham - ASB in and around Knowle Village including the new skate park
  • Soberton/Newtown - raised local concerns for speeding traffic along Heath Road, and the Newtown Straight especially at school times.
  • Hambledon - lack of youth provisions/activities in the area.

These are the priorities that people in your local area have agreed with the Safer Neighbourhoods team. You can influence these priorities by contacting your team, attending a meeting or speaking to members of the team when you see them out and about.

Action we have taken in relation to your local priorities

You said...you wanted us to tackle anti-social behaviour, under age drinking and drugs offences
We did...The continued use of local operations by the team and our colleagues in the Special Constabulary and the ACSO's to provide pro-active high visibility patrols to counter anti-social behaviour, under age drinking and drugs offences. For instance, following a peak in such incidents in February 2009 across the area,  we have managed to bring down the number of incidents to lower levels throughout March and April using our 'Operation Bounce'.

Continued monitoring and review of acceptable behaviour contracts already in place on several people and further implentation of new ABC's where applicable, in conjuction with our multi-agency partners

  • A trend of rising ASB in Whiteley saw the SNT using Operation Bounce regularly on Friday and Saturday nights through the rest of September and into October/November, which brought a reduction in reported incidents.
  • The SNT have requested the use of Flashing Speed limit repeater signs on the Denmead Road approaching Southwick from the traffic engineers at WCC, owing to community concerns re traffic speed in the village following a serious crash in the summer and the Parish council and Highways are working together to remove further risk.
  • Continued monitoring and the build up of intelligence and evidence by the SNT concerning a suspect for repeated non dwelling burglaries and theft in the Boarhunt area, resulted in a male, who lived temporarily in the area, being arrested in October and charged with three offences & several other matters were taken into consideration by the court.
  • Community concerns in Knowle Village regarding individuals involved in local ASB have seen our SNT being involved in a lot of multi-agency meetings behind the scenes, to problem solve these long standing issues. Supplementing this approach, our Operation Bounce has been used to provide a high visibility deterrent also, especially on Friday nights.
  • The SNT have been liaising and working alongside the Roads Policing Unit to tackle the concerns in Soberton and Newtown for speeding traffic. Speed surveys and checks are being looked into, and the SNT have been providing a High Visibility presence on the Newtown Straight at school times to help reduce traffic speed.
  • The Safer Neighbourhood Panel of Denmead/Hambledon & Southwick recognised from the SNT's research into increasing ASB in Hambledon last year that youths of a certain age were likely to keep committing ASB in the area because they were bored. Panel members including Hambledon Parish Council and WCC's ASB officer have, through the year, worked at getting the youngsters of Hambledon involved in choosing the local of local activities they would like.

Current initiatives:

Continued feedback and updates to the local communities from the SNT via regular parish magazine articles, Neighbourhood Watch articles and e-mails, plus attendance at public/parish meetings supplemented by e-mailed reports to the parish councils and community safety partners.

Future initiatives:

  • Increased Promotion of new neighbourhood watch schemes in the district.
  • Continued liaison and regular meetings with parish councils and NH Watch and other agencies to problem solve local issues.
  • The increased use of flashing speed limit repeater signs on rural roads in our communities, to improve road safety and address local concerns and our participation in joint operations with the Roads Policing Unit regarding traffic law enforcement.
  • The development of 'SHOPWATCH' in Wickham Square
  • The promotion of the district's 'Countrywatch' scheme.

Denmead Show

On 12 June PCSO Laurence Day and PC Emma Port from the SNT attended the Denmead show held at Denmead Junior School. They were on hand at the community event to give crime prevention advice and meet and talk with local people. Here they are pictured with an old police car which was on show at the event.

Safer Neighbourhood panels

Our SNT area has two Safer Neighbourhood Panels, one of which is centrally based at Denmead, to cover the communities of Denmead, Hambledon and Southwick.

The second is centrally based at Wickham, to cover the communities of Wickham, Whiteley, Knowle, Newtown, Boarhunt, and the Sobertons.

The panel meets quarterly and comprises of Police (Sgt Stanton) and members of Winchester City Council's Community Safety Team, and representatives from the local communities which currently consist of Neighborhood Watch members, parish and district councillors, residents association members  and any member of the public who wishes to attend as a representative  to 'voice ' a community concern.

The panel listens to local representations about community concerns and issues it helps to set local Policing priorities.

It really is a good way to give the communities a 'say' and relies on community feedback.

The aim of the panel is to 'problem solve' these matters using the resources available to them through local authorities, Police and other agencies and contacts.

The next Panel meetings are:

  • 21/09/2010, 2pm at the Denmead Community Centre for the Denmead area.

If you cannot get to any of the above meetings you can still bring community concerns to the attention of the Police and Winchester City Council partners by using the 'YOUR VOICE COUNTS' suggestion leaflets and suggestion boxes that are situated around the beats.

These are analysed and also help focus our local policing priorities.

Suggestion boxes can be found at -

  • Denmead - Village News and at Denmead Community Centre.
  • Whiteley -  Tesco(customer desk)  and Meadowside Centre (upstairs)
  • Knowle- village store Wickham - Community centre.
  • Soberton/Newtown- Village halls.
  • Southwick - village store
  • Boarhunt- village store
