Your local priorities and action we have taken

Locally, we work with your community to find out what matters most where you live. We will work with you and our partner agencies to agree the main priorities for the area and how we will work together to tackle them.

Meon Valley South Safer Neighbourhoods priorties are:

WB11: Whitley

Road traffic offences

Description: Cars are being driven in an anti-social way on the roads around Whiteley village. This is known as 'cruising'.

Location: Arterial roads around Whiteley village

Monthly Update:

Raised at the Safer Neighbourhood Panel and agreed as a community priority. raffic department is aware of the issue and PCSO Reeves will be looking at long term solutions.

Anti-social behaviour

Description: Priority set to ensure police patrols during the summer period due to historic anti-social behaviour by some young people in the skate park.

Location: Skate park

Monthly Update:

PC Crossley and PCSO Reeves will ensure patrols in this area and plan operations to ensure any anti-social behaviour is appropriately policed.

WB12: Wickham and Knowle

Anti-social behaviour and damage

Description: There is a group of young people congregating in the Wickham area. They are being anti-social and intimidating to local residents. They are now meeting at the recreation ground where damage is being caused.

Location: Water Meadows and recreation ground, Wickham

Monthly Update:

The local team, headed by PC Newman, have identified all the group and parents have been informed of their children's activities. Further police operations will target this group if their anti-social behaviour continues.

WB13: Newtown and Soberton Heath

Road traffic offences and speeding

Description: Vehicles speeding along Church Road and Liberty Road early in the morning from 6:30am and then again from 4pm.

Location: Church Road, Newtown

Monthly Update:

The local Safer Neighbourhoods Team has conducted a non-enforceable patrol activity which indicated seven drivers were speeding out of about 30 vehicles using the road. Each driver was spoken to by a police officer and suitably advised. The team will be conducting an operation where fixed penalty tickets will be issued over the next month.

Anti-social behaviour

Description: Historic reports over the previous summer of street drinking and criminal damage at the play park. Potential for similar incidents this summer.

Location: Play park Heath Road

Monthly Update:

Problem re-opened after consultation at the Safer Neighbourhood Panel. The area will be included in operations over the summer period.

WB14: Soberton and Hambledon

Road traffic offences and speeding

Description: Speeding along the B2150 to the A32.

Location: West Street, Hambledon

Monthly Update:

PC Port attended the parish council AGM meeting which was well attended. PC Port explained the community Speed Watch scheme but unfortunately no-one signed up to become a volunteer which is disappointing. We would encourage people to be involved if they have time. We are still patrolling the area and carrying out speed checks to advise drivers. The parish council currently have the flashing reminder sign in Hambledon which is assisting the situation.

Theft

Description: We have had a noticeable increase in lead thefts from buildings, both residential and business in Hambledon, Denmead and Soberton. There has also been an increase in garden equipment thefts overnight.

Location: Hambledon village

Monthly Update:

Theft in Hambledon has decreased. This is still an area we are actively patrolling and have operations planned to target the offenders. I would encourage people to continue to call to report suspicious people or vehicles in the area and report any thefts which have taken place as we are aware some are still unreported. Please call 101 with any details.

WB15: Southwick and Boarhunt

Anti-social behaviour and vehicles

Description: Groups of youths are gathering at the recreation ground on Trampers Lane and driving at speed across the grass doing handbrake turns.

Location: Trampers Lane

Monthly Update:

Officers have been working on this problem and after discussion at the Safer Neighbourhood Panel, it has become a community priority.

WB16: Denmead

Theft

Description: We have had a noticeable increase in lead thefts from buildings, both residential and business in Hambledon, Denmead and Soberton. There has also been an increase in garden equipment thefts overnight.

Location: Denmead

Monthly Update:

Theft in Hambledon has decreased. This is still an area we are actively patrolling and have operations planned to target the offenders. I would encourage people to continue to call to report suspicious people or vehicles in the area and report any thefts which have taken place as we are aware that some are still unreported. Please call 101 with any details.

Road traffic offences and speeding

Description: Speeding problems on Hambledon Road, Forest Road and Southwick Road. All roads are now 30mph

Location: Hambledon Road

Monthly Update:

Forest Road is regularly patrolled by officers to target speeding at the location. In this month's parish article there was an appeal by PC Port for volunteers to take part in community Speed Watch, however as of yet we have had little response. If anyone is interested please do not hesitate to contact us.

Rowdy and inconsiderate behaviour

Description: Reports of broken alcohol bottles being found in the mornings by the skate park and pavilion. Reports of nuisance to users of the pavilion.

Location: King George Playing Fields, Denmead.

Monthly update:

The incidents of anti-social behaviour at this location have decreased. Funding has been granted for a kick wall to be at the location so we are just waiting approval of the actual location of the wall then it can be implemented. Please continue to report any issues to the local police so we can deal promptly with them.

Current initiatives:

Denmead kickwallLatest news!

A project aimed at cutting anti-social behaviour in Denmead has now"kicked"off.

A "kick wall" (pictured right photo, The News, Portsmouth) has been erected at King George playing field.

PC Emma Port said: "Some local children were using the pavilion roof to kick their football on and it was damaging the tiles."We spoke to the youngsters and they asked if we could look into putting up a kick wall."

She added: "I applied to Hampshire Police Authority for of funding and was provided with £3,000. The parish council paid the rest of the money needed- £2,000 and the Denmead Youth Partnership helped design the wall. We’re now at the stage where the wall is being erected. "This is a great solution to a local problem and hopefully one which will keep the children and the parish council happy!"

Other current initiatives include: continued feedback and updates to the local communities from the SNT via regular parish magazine articles, Neighbourhood Watch articles and e-mails, plus attendance at public/parish meetings supplemented by e-mailed reports to the parish councils and community safety partners.

Future initiatives:

  • Increased promotion of new neighbourhood watch schemes in the district.
  • Continued liaison and regular meetings with parish councils and NH Watch and other agencies to problem solve local issues.
  • The increased use of flashing speed limit repeater signs on rural roads in our communities, to improve road safety and address local concerns and our participation in joint operations with the Roads Policing Unit regarding traffic law enforcement.
  • The development of 'SHOPWATCH' in Wickham Square
  • The promotion of the district's 'Countrywatch' scheme.

Safer Neighbourhood panels

Our SNT area has two Safer Neighbourhood Panels, one of which is centrally based at Denmead, to cover the communities of Denmead, Hambledon and Southwick.

The second is centrally based at Wickham, to cover the communities of Wickham, Whiteley, Knowle, Newtown, Boarhunt, and the Sobertons.

The panel meets quarterly and comprises of Police (Sgt Hibberd) and members of Winchester City Council's Community Safety Team, and representatives from the local communities which currently consist of Neighborhood Watch members, parish and district councillors, residents association members  and any member of the public who wishes to attend as a representative  to 'voice ' a community concern.

The panel listens to local representations about community concerns and issues it helps to set local Policing priorities.

It really is a good way to give the communities a 'say' and relies on community feedback.

The aim of the panel is to 'problem solve' these matters using the resources available to them through local authorities, Police and other agencies and contacts.

The next Panel meetings are:

Wickham Community Centre at 7pm on the following dates:

  • Thursday, December 8

Please contact Nicki Oliver if you are attending [clerk.wickham@parish.hants.gov.uk]

Denmead Community Centre at 2pm  on the following dates:

  • TBA

Please contact Kelvin Andrews if you are attending [dclerk@denmeadparishcouncil.co.uk]

If you cannot get to any of the above meetings you can still bring community concerns to the attention of the police and Winchester City Council partners by using the 'YOUR VOICE COUNTS' suggestion leaflets and suggestion boxes that are situated around the beats.

These are analysed and also help focus our local policing priorities.

Suggestion boxes can be found at -

  • Denmead - Village News and at Denmead Community Centre.
  • Whiteley -  Tesco(customer desk)  and Meadowside Centre (upstairs)
  • Knowle- village store Wickham - Community centre.
  • Soberton/Newtown- Village halls.
  • Southwick - village store
  • Boarhunt- village store
