Action we have taken in relation to your priorities

You said:

You wanted us to work on reducing speeding on a several roads in Bishops Waltham, Swanmore, Droxford, Curdridge, Durley, Shirrell Heath, Waltham Chase and Owslebury.

We did:

Since speeding has been identified as a community priority in these villages, your local Safer Neighbourhoods Team Police Officers have been trained to use speed cameras. We also have purchased a Flashing speed reminder sign to remind motorists of the correct speed limit if they are travelling too fast.

There has also been an increase in high visibility patrols at all identified speeding sites. In the past all speeding complaints for these villages have been dealt with by the Roads Policing Team in Cosham but can now be dealt with by local officers.

If members of the local community highlight a speeding problem, action can now be taken at the locations and times that people need us the most.

You said:

You wanted Burglary prevention to be a community priority.

We did:

Several Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) operations have taken place in the local area recently.

10th December 2009 - Curdridge

14th December 2009 - Curdridge

10th February 2010 - Swanmore, Durley and Upham

The ANPR system uses a character recognition camera to pick up passing vehicle registration plates.

The ANPR camera is linked to a computer holding a large database of information such as details of uninsured drivers or details of vehicles involved in crime eg. Burglaries. The system alerts officers immediately if a vehicle passes the camera and is subject to an ANPR 'hit'.

The vehicle and occupants can then be pulled over and checked.

You said:

You wanted us to work on reducing anti-social behaviour in Bishops Waltham, Waltham Chase, Shedfield, Shirrell Heath, Swanmore, Droxford.

We did:

High visibility police patrols have been stepped up to all areas within these villages where the local community have reported anti social behaviour. Any persons causing anti social behaviour will be stop checked and moved on from the area.

Persons repeatedly causing anti social behaviour will be put forward for an acceptable behaviour contract (ABC) or an Anti Social Behaviour Order (ASBO).

Latest News from the Meon Valley Safer Neighbourhoods Team

No Cold Calling Zones:

No Cold Calling Zones were launched on 18th August in the following roads:

  • Whitegates, Durley
  • St. Peters Close, Curdridge
  • Canford Close, Shedfield
  • Red Leaves, Waltham Chase
  • Forest Gardens, Waltham Chase

No Cold Calling Zones raise the awareness of door step crime and give residents the confidence to say “No” to cold callers and rogue traders who seek business at their doorstep. The signs placed at all entrances to these roads and on each of the residents front doors should deter cold calling from these designated areas. Residents living within these zones are encouraged to report any cold callers they feel are suspicious.

We are currently looking at setting up 10 more zones across the Meon Valley Central sector.

Hampshire Trading Standards have a Quick Response Team who can come out to your home if a doorstep caller, offering property repairs, is causing you concern and:

  • Is still at your home
  • Is due to return e.g. to collect payment
  • Is offering to take you to the bank to withdraw cash

In these circumstances call the Police on 0845 045 45 45 (or 999 if urgent) or Trading Standards Quick Response Team on 01962 833 666 for immediate assistance.

A list of local approved Tradesmen is available from Trading Standards by calling 08454 04 05 06 or online at www.buywithconfidence.gov.uk.

Crime Alerts through Email:

We currently hold an email address database which we use to send out crime alerts by email. The alerts contain information such as witness appeals, crime figures for the individual villages and information on suspicious vehicles that we need local residents to be aware of quickly and share any information they have with us. The database has been extremely useful for us as crime alert emails are a quick and effective way of keeping local residents informed of what is going on in their village, increasing vigilance and therefore reducing crime in the sector. If you would be interested in receiving these crime updates please email: meon.valley.snt@hampshire.pnn.police.uk

Crime updates through Parish Magazines:

For those who do not have access to email we will be publishing crime figures and updates through the parish magazines so that we can reach as many people in the sector as possible and encourage everyone to report suspicious or criminal activity in your village.

Community Engagements:

Dates: Starting 19th February 2010 then Friday Evenings Fortnightly thereafter.

The handsets increase the amount of time Police Officers and PCSOs can spend on the beat.
