Your local priorities
Locally, we work with your community to find out what matters most where you live. We will work with you and our partner agencies to agree the main priorities for the area and how we will work together to tackle them.
Bridge Safer Neighbourhoods top three priorities are:
As a result of ongoing consultation with the community, three priorities have been identified as of common concern for the residents of Bridgemary.
- To reduce anti-social behaviour and vandalism, particularly in the ward of Bridgemary North.
- To reduce anti-social behaviour and related disorder within the area of Carisbrooke Shopping Precinct.
- To reduce the misuse of drugs and alcohol by young people.
Success or otherwise can be measured through crime statistics, community feedback and participation of young people in community initiatives.
These are the priorities that people in your local area have agreed with the Safer Neighbourhoods team. You can influence these priorities by contacting your team, attending a meeting or speaking to members of the team when you see them out and about.
The Bridgemary Safer Neighbourhood team work from a base within the local community, and patrol on police mountain bikes in high visibility clothing. We work every day of the year, day and night, in all weathers. We are also involved in many residents and community associations providing care and advice where we can.
We are named the Bridge Team, for several reasons; it is a reference to the main geographical area we cover, which is Bridgemary. The objectives of the team are to make the neighbourhoods within our beat a safer place to live and work. We aim to reduce crime and the fear of crime in the Bridgemary, Peel Common and North Rowner area but also to contribute to the community by our daily visible presence and by being an easily accessible team of officers.
The main crime problems in our area are criminal damage and anti-social behaviour issues. There has been a historical youth nuisance problem which the team are endeavoring to tackle by providing youth diversionary schemes and by engaging young people in an effort to break down barriers in the neighbourhood. .
Action we have taken in relation to your priorities
To reduce anti-social behaviour and vandalism, particularly in the ward of Bridgemary North.
March 2011:
The BRIDGE SNT has received reports of youth related anti social behaviour within the area of James Close. The behaviour described has ranged from "knock and run" to the use of foul language. The SNT have identified those involved and have taken appropriate action against them. Some of those involved are subject to acceptable behaviour contracts, and due to their inappropriate behaviour in James Close are in breach of those contracts. If this behaviour continues, these individuals will be subject to greater sanctions. In the meantime, there will be a greater policing presence in the area.
February 2011:
Reports of Anti-Social Behaviour continue to fall within the Bridgemary North Ward and the wider neighbourhood. The team continue to take action against those who are being disruptive in the community. There are no specific areas of concern at present. Despite the reduction, the Local Action Group who met on the 12th January 2011 have decided that it would be appropriate to keep the priority and allow the Safer Neighbourhood Team to remain focused on preventing and reducing anti-social behaviour.
To reduce anti-social behaviour within Carisbrooke Shopping Precinct
March 2011:
The reports of anti social behaviour within the shopping precinct have continued to decline. There have been some positive comments from residents and traders, suggesting an improvement in the area. The BRIDGE SNT acknowledges that the area still attracts groups of young people, and will continue to monitor their presence through highly visible patrols. Where incidents occur, positive action will be taken ranging from dispersal, seizure of alcohol and if necessary arrest. There are no plans to involve the youth services in the area unless there is an increase in anti-social behaviour.
February 2011:
Since the beginning of January, the area of Carisbrooke Shopping Precinct has received a number of highly visible patrols. There has been a decline in anti-social behaviour observed by the attending officers and mirrored by a reduction in reporting from residents. Enquiries have been made as to the removal of planters from the area which is used by the young people and these remain ongoing. The area remains a priority for the team, and we hope to begin some detached youth work with our colleagues from youth services in an effort to provide young people with an alternative activity.
To reduce the misuse of drugs and alcohol by young people.
March 2011:
On 28th February 2011, the BRIDGE SNT executed a Misuse of Drugs Act warrant at a premise within the Bridgemary North ward. The premises had been associated with the supply of controlled substances and had been linked with related anti-social behaviour activity. A male and a female have been arrested and are currently on police bail pending further investigation. The BRIDGE SNT will continue to pursue drug related issues within the neighbourhood particularly if they are impacting on the lives of residents and the young people within the area.
February 2011:
The community continue to provide the Safer Neighbourhood Team with information raising their concerns about areas which are suffering through alcohol and drug misuse. The information assists to target our resources in the right direction, as previous updates have shown the focus can range from the execution of drug warrants to the seizure of alcohol. The Local Action Group were invited to decide whether this priority should remain. There was an overwhelming view that the work undertaken to address this priority supports other targets such as the reduction of ASB, theft and other related crime.
