Your local priorities
Locally, we work with your community to find out what matters most where you live. We will work with you and our partner agencies to agree the main priorities for the area and how we will work together to tackle them.
Gosport Town Centre and Anglesey Safer Neighbourhood teams top three priorities are:
- Anti-social behaviour and drug use in the Sea field Estate during evenings and weekends.
- Alcohol misuse in Falklands Gardens during the spring and summer.
- Cycling in the pedestrianised areas of Gosport town Centre.
These are the priorities that people in your local area have agreed with the Safer Neighbourhoods team. You can influence these priorities by contacting your team, attending a meeting or speaking to members of the team when you see them out and about.
Action we have taken in relation to your local priorities
Three mis-use of drugs warrants have been executed within the Seafield Estate. Three individuals have been charged with drug related offences. Further investigations are continuing in regard to a number of other individuals. The Falkland Gardens has in place a designated public place order. This order gives the police to power to remove alcohol from individuals in the defined area if we believe the consumption will lead to incidents of anti social behaviour. This order is robustly enforced.
We are currently running an enforcement campaign within Gosport High street. Individuals found cycling in this area (if 16 years or older) will be issued a Fixed penalty notice. Those under this age will receive a letter home to their parents. We have completed cycle enforcement days –issuing fixed penalty notices for cycling in pedestrianised area’s predominantly the High Street & the approach to Gosport ferry pontoon. This operation; lasted two hours and seventeen fixed penalty notices were issued. We are currently in consultation with our partners Gosport Borough Council & Hampshire Highways-reviewing the current signage in regard to no cycling-with a view to making the signage much clearer & easy for all to understand. .
Gosport Shopwatch proves a success
Gosport Shopwatch has given local shops the power to protect themselves and their livelihoods from criminals.
The scheme involves a radio link between shops in the town, the police and CCTV. Recent crime figures have reflected that it is a useful tool not only in detecting crime but also preventing it.
Recently, the scheme was put to very good use by Aaron Richardson, a member of staff from Tony’s Fresh Fish. A known shoplifter was seen by Mr Richardson outside Waitrose, and he alerted police via the radio link of the shoplifter’s presence. Police attempted to alert Waitrose to the presence of the shoplifter, and Mr Richardson was asked to attend Waitrose and alert them to the shoplifter’s presence.
On doing this Mr Richardson saw the shoplifter exiting the store with a basketful of stolen meat. Although staff are strongly advised not to confront offenders, Mr Richardson made a decision to intervene and managed to retrieve the stolen goods and return them to the store. The thief was then detained by police within an hour due to further information provided by stopwatch members.
In recognition of his efforts, Mr Richardson has been awarded a District Commanders Congratulations from Hampshire Constabulary, presented to him by Chief Inspector Jason Kenny.
