Police support volunteers are people with the time to give and the enthusiasm to make a difference.
You don’t necessarily have to have any particular skills – although specialists are always welcome – just the right attitude and community values.

"Communities frequently say that they want to see a uniformed police presence on the streets and in their neighbourhood. It's my job to make the best use of our resources to achieve this and also deliver a whole variety of other policing services.
"Having the support of people who give up their time and talents to help our teams means that I can keep officers and staff where communities want them to be - out of offices and actively working in neighbourhoods.” - Chief Constable Alex Marshall

What could you do as a volunteer?
Volunteers work alongside police officers, special constables, police community support officers and police staff, providing mainly administrative support to enable the team to focus on community priorities and visible policing.
You could be carrying out tasks as varied as organising community meetings, making sure photos of the team are up to date or carrying out research into community issues and crime trends. Click the links in the list below to read about the current volunteer roles we have.
Or, you might have a skill to offer us that you would like to discuss.
Who volunteers?
Volunteers come from a variety of backgrounds, including:
- Students looking for experience and something valuable for their CV
- People In employment looking for some variety or a change of direction
- People who are out of work and looking to brush up on work skills or gain some new ones
- People looking to return to the workplace after having or caring for children and wanting to learn new skills
- Retired people with skills they could put to good use with us in support of their community
- People who are already active in their community and keen to get further involved.
The hours can usually be flexible to suit you and your commitments – as much or as little as you can spare. Police support volunteers will receive an induction to the force, and training on our systems to enable them to carry out their role.
We do it!
The force already has a small number of police support volunteers. Click here to read more about our current volunteers and what they do (.doc, 28kb)
