The challenge
Hampshire Constabulary is recruiting members of the community for local and specialist independent advisory groups (IAGs) to help develop better understanding of where you live by questioning or challenging our practices in a constructive way.
Volunteer group members will be called upon to advise during major investigations, explore community issues and question police practices and policies.
Who can apply?
Membership to advisory groups used to be by invitation-only but is now open to residents who live or work in Hampshire and the Isle of Wight.
We’re looking to recruit enough people to make up seven groups, with a maximum of fifteen people on each group. We are looking for anyone who is not connected to the police service in any way - people who are already have access to channels for having their say on policing. You do not need any qualifications or experience, just the willingness to have a voice in your community.
Main duties
Hampshire Constabulary currently has two IAGs, with members representing specialist areas such as race and faith and lesbian gay bisexual transgender (LGBT) issues.
Following an internal review, IAGs will now also represent geographical areas (both rural and urban areas). Geographical IAGs will consider local issues including critical incidents, operational practice and planning and the local impact of decisions around force policy and procedure. Remember you don't need any specialist qualifications - just an interest in your local area.
The force level IAG will remain, but will consider issues affecting the whole organisation. You will be on an IAG as an individual, you are not there to represent anyone else’s view or speak on behalf of the community.
Meeting times
IAGs will meet between four and six times a year. Meeting venues are to be confirmed and may vary throughout the year. Meeting times will be agreed by the individual IAGs once they are set up
The unpredictable nature of policing means that groups may also be called as specific issues arise.
Benefits
We can't pay you for your time but we can pay your travel expenses, for full details see the guidance notes on the linked application form below.
Making a real difference
As a member of our panel you will be vital in giving us an impartial view and opinion on a variety of issues. Although we can not always act on everything, we will always value you ideas and thoughts.
Sound interesting? Apply now
We are now recruiting for local groups across Hampshire and the Isle of Wight. Meeting times are flexible and varied to fit around you. Our initial application deadline has now passed, however we are still very keen to hear from anyone in the Portsmouth and Isle of Wight areas, as well as anyone else with an interest in being involved. We expect to have a second recruitment drive in the future and can carry any further applications over until then.

Not for you, but want to tell us what you think?
Independent Advisory Groups are just one of the ways we’re getting our communities to talk to us and give us honest feedback to keep improving local policing. Whatever you decide, we’d like you to continue to raise your voice to help us build safer communities. If this role isn’t for you but you still want to feedback your thoughts, comments and experiences of Hampshire Constabulary, please visit our Your Voice Counts page here.
