Coterminous Certificates

Many people wonder what a Coterminous Certificate is.

It is merely a means of issuing both Firearm and Shotgun Certificates where an applicant requires both (to expire at the same time) at a cheaper cost to the applicant and also at a reduced administration cost to the police force. If an applicant holds or requires both Firearm and Shotgun Certificates he can request Coterminous Certificates and normally the best way to do this is:
  1. When the Firearm Certificates becomes due for renewal, request (at the same time) that your Shotgun Certificate is renewed also. Just complete both forms in the normal way and post them together with the reduced fee of £50, i.e. £40 for the firearm and £10 for the shotgun.
  2. When the Shotgun Certificate becomes due for renewal, and you already hold a Firearm Certificate, request that the certificate be made coterminous with the Firearm Certificate. This will cost you the normal £40 but you will pay a reduced fee later when the Firearm Certificate expires.
  3. If the application is for the grant of both certificates the fee is £50 for the firearm and £10 for the shotgun, making a total of £60.
  4. Payment should be submitted as a cheque made payable to: Hampshire Police Authority.

In the long term, it becomes cheaper for the applicant to hold a Coterminous Certificate and it also avoids unnecessary enquiries for the police.
