Antiques - Firearms/Shotguns

Many people collect firearms as antiques. Below is some advice to help you to determine when a firearm can be classified asn an antique.

The Home Office recommend that the following be regarded as antiques, within the definition of the word, subject to non-use, i.e. if any weapon is to be used then the antique exemption ceases.

  1. All original muzzle loading firearms made before 1939.
  2. Breach loading firearms chambered for rim fire cartridges exceeding .23" calibre but excluding those chambered for 9mm rim fire.
  3. Breech loading firearms using ignition systems other than rim fire or centre fire, including pin fire, needle fire and traditional ignition systems contemporary with these.
  4. Breech loading centre firearms originally chambered for obsolete cartridges and retaining their original chambering.
