Brighton and Hove Pride

Advice & Information

Published: 17/08/2011

Hampshire Constabulary takes part in the Brighton & Hove Pride each year as part of our commitment to providing a visible and active presence in all our communities.

Hundreds of thousands pf people attend the event in August which celebrates and promotes equality for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGB&T) people.

Our involvement is organised by the force’s LGB&T Resource Group.

Policing with Pride

In 2011, four police officers, one Special constable and two police community support officers joined the parade on Saturday, August 13.

Northern area commander Chief Superintendent Mark Chatterton represented the force’s senior officer team. “This was my first year at Brighton Pride,” he said, “and I really enjoyed it.

“The police were in the middle of the parade and we received a huge cheer from the crowds as we went passed with many people saying they were grateful for our efforts in policing the recent unrest we’ve seen in several parts of the country.

“The whole event, from planning our involvement, to marching in the parade and our engaging with festival goers at stand in the park, was a great success for the force.

“I’m impressed by the level of professionalism shown by all those involved who are clearly committed to ensuring the force retains a visible presence among our communities.”

Kicking hate out of sport

It was the fifth year Hampshire Constabulary officers marched in uniform and they also wore badges in support of the Kick It Out Campaign which aims to drive all forms of hate out of sport.

PC Joe Finch, who’s a Lesbian and Gay Liaison Officer (LAGLO) based on the Isle of Wight, said:  “We’re getting involved with the Kick It Out and the Justin Fashanu campaigns both of which are dedicated to promoting respect among players and fans in sport.

“Five of the south’s teams are playing together in the Championship this season which is a good opportunity to reach many of our local football supporters.”

Assaulted, threatened or ntimidated because of who you fancy or who you are? Report it!

The force’s stand in Preston Park once again proved popular with the team providing information about hate crime reporting and the constabulary in general.

Other forces represented at Brighton Pride this year included Sussex, Kent, Hertfordshire and British Transport Police.
